Warm up

Post by RS4_Ollie » Sat Aug 30, 2014 8:12 am

Hi, how long does your engine take to hit 90'c?

Mine take about 10 minutes and about 4 miles of normal driving about 40mph.

Is this normal or is my thermostat shot?

I work only about 3 miles from home so it's not reaching full temp when I get to work only about 75-80'c, not ideal.

Cheers

Only 3 miles, maybe get a push bike? ;)
About 10 mins sounds about the same for me.

Oil or coolant?
Coolant about 6 minutes then same about 10 for oil.

3 miles driving will kill the engine with coking and the oil will contain a lot of moisture.

Coolant takes about 6 miles
Oil takes about 8 miles
Both about 10-12 minutes depending on ambient temperature.

I certainly wouldn't be using it for such a short journey as you are though.

Depends on the external temperature; in Summer mine can get up to temperature within a couple of miles but on a cold icy Winter day I can be nearly at work (8 miles) before it's up to temperature.

What would you suggest? Get a new job further away :biggrin3: or I could move house but I'm not getting rid of the car!

The moisture in the oil gets evaporated every few days so that's not a worry and the carbon clean is on the cards anyway.

Definitely a bike ;)
Take 15 mins and good for you and won't kill the car.

+1

Definitely wouldn't take the bike option, the roads are just too dangerous for me to even consider riding a bike.
