CAI with valve

Ok so I had no choice but to remove the Aux rad and perform the delete on it but while I was at it I wanted to do the CAI that a few have performed on their cars.

Well I have to say it was quite an easy job for someone who does not mind getting their hands dirty :biggrin3:

so this was the reason why

This is the back of the rad so I can only conclude this was corrosion that caused the leak.

so to the CAI well once the aux rad was removed and the eBay T Pipe was fitted I could concentrate on the cold feed.
The butterfly on mine was working fine and I was concerned about water getting in, well more a bucket of a puddle then rain water. So I decided that I wanted to keep the butterfly flap so clipped off the trumpet to have a look.

To pipe fitted and a spare, no original clips used.

So the challenge was how do I mount the trunking to the trumpet?
Solution was drill four holes in the trumpet and tie wrap them together. When doing this I bunched up the pipe so some of the metal coils in the pipe were pushed against the trumpet and made holes to feed the cable ties through.

Now that was done I trimmed the ties I heat shrunk the supplied heat shirked sleeve over the connections.

So clip the trumpet back on trim and mount the trumpet at the other end, bit of wrinkle paint to make it less noticeable all done.

Great write up.

Can I just check though: I vaguely recall a discussion - a fre years ago on here - where (I think) the advice was not to fit the trunk flush with the power flap hole. You're not wanting a ram effect, just some reliable cold air. Does that make sense? Happy to be corrected!

I wanted to be able to control the flap when wet or should I say power through a puddle I can drp the rev or back off and the valve will close. Having looked at the setup my next stage is to put in a control system to take over from the ECU control to open and close the valve when I chose to so I have a full working cold air feed at all time and closed when wet.

I think this should be possible as the flap works on a vacuum setup so it should not be too hard to sort that out so right now it's only at 5k when it opens which I can live with.

Oh I see. I only looked at the pretty pictures and assumed you were going to take the actual flap out. I haven't heard of anyone doing what you have planned.

I was going to remove the trumpet as other have done but at the back of my head I'm thinking what about all that water that could get in, that's when I thought why not leave the valve in and workout how to manually operate it as I drive my car every day and is not just a fair weather car.

+1 remove the flap.

You are not going to get any water there.
Even if the entire front bit of the car was underwater and completely covered the CAI pipe then the engine will just drawn air from the front radiator vent and the one in the wheel arch. It won't hydro-lock and suck water up as it'll just take the path of least resistance.

Even if you got a jet wash and aimed it at the pipe you'd get marginal spray actually make it into the airbox and then even if it did get that far it's got to get through the intake filter and then up into the intake manifold.

The airbox design does have protection against water spray and such like so I wouldn't worry too much.

May be I'm over engineering it then :bash:

I like the idea though. It's possible a drive through a puddle at motorway speeds killed my MAF. I don't have the original air box though just a CAF with the Revolution air intake kit.
