squeaky sound when turning

Post by harding » Wed Aug 13, 2014 2:00 pm

Hey!
I recently discovered a squeaky sound when turning the steering wheel fully left or right while slow moving (parking etc). It sounds like metal-to-metal kind of squeak. If i go abit faster, like in a roundabout, there is no such sound. Sometimes the sound is even there when not moving at all.
The sound is only there when fully steering either left or right. If i steer like 98% left/right, the sound is not there. Any clues?

Power steering pump, don't hold it hard against full lock. :bash:

You shouldn't do that on any car with power steering.

I dont need to hold it hard to make it sound like this. Slightly touching full lock and it starts to screech. Is it like this on every RS4?

Not the steering pump. This is actually Audi A4 trait - mine has done this before and I sweated a bit until I searched here and the metallic grind/knock etc is in fact an Audi A4 design trait - what you are experiencing is possibly tyre jumping. I can't say for sure it's that so don't ignore a check of Power steering fluid levels and any other checks...

I can't find PetrolDave's post to this in a thread in the last year - he did explain it eloquently and it's not the one above that I have pasted in :biggrin2:

it's the same on mine, the moment it touches full lock it screeches - Audi tried telling me a new Steering Pump would fix it for £1500 i thought better of that. when we had the rolling road day at AMD last year I noticed pretty much all the RS's made the same noise on full lock. not had any issues but just never use full lock.

Yes totally agree you don't need to fully lock it especially on a 3 point turn, just do a 5 point instead if need be, if my mrs drives the car she knows now not to fully lock out the steering or she gets that look .... Also don't pull away on full lock it just scrubs your tyres

We discovered a cure for this last year when I noticed it manovering in a tight place with head out window to see the wheels.

Close all windows and turn music up when nearing full lock!

This will work for most faults but eventually you will have to upgrade the sound system!

Mine does this too. When Audi had it the tech guy did say it sounded louder than normal, but I've just learned to live with it and not full lock it unless I really have to.
