Further problems with my RS4 Avant!

Post by Rich'sRS4Avant » Tue Jul 29, 2014 10:40 am

Hi guys I'm back again looking for advice on further problems with my RS4! Never had so many problems with a nice car and just wondered if anybody out there can help me out.

The current problem is occasionally when I go to start the vehicle which usually only when warm or sat in the sun it starts and shows the brake warning light, ABS and traction control light until I turn off the engine and re start it which clears it. (see pic attached)
The 2nd problem which I'm not sure if they are linked and usually when warm or sat in the sun the vehicle just turns over and doesn't fire, Sometimes if I try again it will fire up instantly or more frequently now its taking up to 6 attempts hitting the start button before it will fire and also occasionally only fires on half the cylinders and sounds dog ruff.

The fault codes showing are as follows:
Engine component control relay
Fuel pump relay
Throttle body actuator

Does this point to any particular component ie a relay or is there numerous problems with this car.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated

Kind regards

PS can anybody tell me how to insert a jpeg image?

Richard

My advice when seeing what looks like multiple random electronic failures is to check the condition of the battery and the alternator.
might be worth borrowing one or running the current battery through a conditioner. Any garage should be able to run a health check on the battery quickly and cheaply enough (what you are looking for is the amps pre, during and post engine start... voltage is a small part of the story).

Do you have VCDS?

It's software for your laptop with a sspecial lead that connects to the car so you can scan and trouble shoot problems.

VCDS will save time, money and any headaches. Consider buying as part of ownership. You'll get the cost back in diagnosis and resolving most problems yourself:

I'll have my VCDS with me if you don't 1) get your own in time to diagnose or 2) hook up with Ad's...

Hi,

I had the same issue last year in Dec. Both scenarios were experienced. I started recognizing when the car won't start by the looking at the lights that won't go out when you turn on the ignition. Can't remember which though ( I think ABS and EPC). I would just sit and cycle the ignition until the lights went out and then it would start. Spoke to the local dealer's guru and he said it sounds like Throttle body! Took the car to him and he said it is the ECM relay for ECU2 (Engine II in VCDS) located in the main fuse box under the main ECU. He replaced the relay and all was sorted... for two weeks and it started again. By that time I invested in a cable and VCDS (best decision ever!) I connected up and got the same kind of errors, but this time it was for ECU1 (Engine in VCDS). Audi replaced the relay located next to the one previously replaced and all was sorted to date.

Your problem sounds like the ECM relay to me. Replace both at the same time and check if this resolves the issue. Not an overly expensive part compared to a throttle body.

The DTCs (errors) I got for the second ECM relay going bust were:

I've had a similar problem happen about 3 times in as many months, so very intermittent but mine is always from cold - perhaps when left out in the sun but I've not really taken note on this aspect. After the second re-occurrence of the problem I decided to change out the battery as it was due a replacement. The problem has happened once since then, so I'm now thinking more along the lines of a faulty relay. Just need time to pull out all relays and investigate further under a magnifying glass.

For reference, the fault codes that get logged and appear when my problem happens are as follows. I don't get any rough running though just similar starting issues and warning lights which can disappear as quickly as they arrive.

Thanks for the Relay information, my suspicion was about right

 I think they were two light greyish relays located next to each other in the plenum chamber. It is a mission to get to them. Wipers arms off, plenum cover off, ECU cover (airbox side of the car) off, ECU unscrewed (a bit scared of this one) and lifted up to reveal the relay carrier underneath. It took some force to get the relay out. They cracked the relay casing in the process so be careful in case it is not the relay. Tried to have a quick look on ELSA for more detail, but need to be off. I might have a look again later.

Good luck and I hope you get it sorted.

Thanks again, nothing is ever simple on these cars

Will have a look at ElsaWin and have a crack at fixing it soon.
