I spec'd it as it was a no-cost option but only use it for a few hours a year when cruising on the French autoroutes as it gets in the way of the gear lever so you can't change gear with it down (unless you're double jointed), and you can't get to the handbrake with it down either.

+1 - Specced my S4 with one and only used it in the same circumstances as Dave. Glad I went without for the RS...

Nope, because it would leave a damn great hole in the centre console, and like I said it is handy for storing a few small things like an iPhone charger lead.

It's just NBG as an armrest IMHO.

Maybe you have double jointed wrists or have a technique that involves coming down on the gear lever from above?

I was taught, by a Group C driver, to always guide the gear lever from the same level rather than holding it or forcing it - and you just can't use that technique with the armrest down.

Not sure how I change gear but I know in other cars having an arm rest there annoys me.

Will see how I am doing it when I get back although silently praying I will not have to use the above 'Ring Insertion' technique mentioned above......

I love mine and never find the arm rest bothers me when changing gear. Must have small arms I guess

I don't have an armrest, mine was specced without one from the factory..

I too find it doesn't really get in the way of shifting. It's great for long journeys on the motorway.
