Looks like part of the charge cooler. There are some pipes leading away from the bit connected to the intake round to the left and through to the battery compartment.
My guess is that it is the coolant pump?

Hang on... isn’t that where the hydraulic top-up normally is ?

Maybe someone can confirm that that second photo is indeed a standard S4 engine bay since I'm just googling.

Guessing the brake fluid header tank location is dependant on LHD or RHD?

I reckin the battery cover is just resting over brake fluid header tank. Doesn't look slotted in place.

so guessing they have replaced the battery with the charge cooler however on the rs4 that's where ECU2 is located. Probably easier to relocate that than a big heavy battery

from what i know about the intercooler setup which isnt a lot, red box is the coolant tank, the green box is the charge cooler and there will be a pump and rad upfront somewhere.
and yes the difference in position of the ecu and hydraulic/brake servo is one of the differences between r/h/d and l/h/d. for a stage 2 kit for the uk the tank will have to go on the opposite side and the pipes to the charge cooler will need extending.

Doh, yes, I’d forgotten about that.

bumper off and crash bar removed, time to drain fluids.
IMG_20140730_181128.jpg
unplug headlights and crash sensors, detach radiator hoses and a/c lines and remove oil cooler lines from the block and the front panel lifts off as one.
