Bogging down?

Post by Sonnyjim » Fri Jun 27, 2014 7:18 pm

Whilst on a bit of a spirited drive today with my mates wife........before you start raising eyebrows he's torn between an B8 S4 and a B7 RS. She had never been in a RS so was I was asked to take her for a 'drive' to see what she thought. When changing up from 8k the car seemed to bog down for a second or two before bursting into life again. Not like hitting the rev limiter this was after changing up, car drives perfectly other wise and only did it a couple of times.
Don't know if that drive has did him any favours for the RS but she 'seemed' to enjoy it. Either that or she was too <beep> scared to say otherwise!
Anyone else experienced this?

Cheers

I'd be confident in saying that's the Torque limiter you are experiencing. All is fine and only an MRC remap will get rid of it

Without a remap the torque can be limited, but I'd say it's more likely that the TC was kicking in. I often give the ESP button a short (not long!) push before spirited acceleration...

Or traction control cutting in to stop wheel spin. Was it wet or tyres gettig a bit bald?

Edit: Dom beat me to it.

Sounds like similar to my experiences when I first owned my car.
As others have said, my case disappeared when I switched of the traction control. Even the light never flashed, it was kicking in.

I first switched off the first stage and seemed to sort it. I'm certain stage 1 is slip regulation, while stage 2 include stability - I'm sure others will confirm or correct me :)

Hmm ok, was dry and in a straight line at the time. After reading above it felt exactly like TC cutting in slightly but not fully. TC getting turned off tomorrow for further testing!

Don't know if it's relevant, but I've seen TC kick in more times when there's a change in loading on the car than wet / dry (but there again I'm still careful in the wet...) - slights crests etc.

Remember that ESP lights up even if it's just the TC that's kicking in, so before disabling it, you could do the same run and look for the warning?

Didn't notice a warning, but I was travelling quickly 'within the national speed limit obviously' and eyes were firmly on the road. Felt it mostly when leaving a tight slip road at about 5k and nailing it in 2nd going to 3rd. Will try again without someone's dearest in the car!

If the ESP light flickers then it's a traction issue and the car was trying to keep you safe, if no signs on the dash then it's the dreaded torque limiter. Mine does the same flat out in to 2nd (haven't noticed into 3rd but could just be my shifting).

Exactly the dilemma I had been in recently, plus C6 RS6 but less convinced on that one.

Probably ESP as mentioned. Is there much tread difference front to rear? Same brand tyres etc, this can cause that issue too.

you wont really notice a warning flash unless it really loses traction a lot , mine being supercharged on a damp day will do that a lot and has no torque limiter now , wich makes it worse if anything as i can have 100% throttle when i want ,it will present a sharp bog down on gear change or if the road contour changes ,say off a roundabout(immediately followed by an expletive :x , so i usually switch off the ESP when in ehthusiatic mode and it doesnt do it , it also did it a lot before when it was standard , so i reckon is just the way it is , tho a little annoying sometimes

i get this even after a mrc map

its like if i dont release the clutch and re apply the throttle at the right time she holds back. no wheel spin, its at high speed.

Not tried it without traction. will give it a go this weekend.
