Gearbox leak or not ? with pics

Guys,

There is a 2006 RS4 I am looking to buy, had a RAC inspection and the engineer picked up what he said was a "misting around the gearbox bell housing" but not quite a leak, nor was it dripping.. There are some pics below.
The engineer said that he did smell the oil and it did not smell of anything (apparently gearbox oil smells..) so perhaps it might be some other type of oil?

The last time it was in a garage was Sep 2013, and the owner said that there has never been any oil drops on the road when the car is parked.

I got the garage where the inspection was done to wipe it all off and then then drive the car, apparently the area stayed dry.

What do you guys think, is this nothing to worry about, or a serious problem??

its on both sides so i would suspect its engne oil maybe from the rear crankshaft oil seal but there is no drip from the drain at the bottom , possibly something from the breather system leaking , even cam covers weeping into the v of the engine then migrating down round the outside of the casing , looks fairly minor but will likely get worse and if its from the crank seal it may get into the clutch eventually causing issues

Just had the same leak it was the oil return pipe from the bottom of the PCV oil separator. If you remove the carbon cover from the rear of the engine and shine a torch down the rear of the engine you will see oil on the top of the gear box. Do a search on here for PVC there is a exploded view of the part.

Thanks both,

Have asked the seller's garage to do some more investigation tomorrow. I will relay these ideas to the garage to help them.

How did this played out? Is the return pipe hard to reach and do I have to take the intake manifold out?

Yes you will need to remove the intake manifold to change the oil return pipe

I changed over my pcv valve without removing the intake manifold, if your patient you can access the return pipe, you might have to remove the pcv first to allow access as it's on the underside of the pcv. Out of interest you haven't had an oil change done recently have you? If done by a numbty then it could be overspill or a leaking oil filter o ring, worth a look if you haven't already.
