The new Rs4 for me isn't good enough to warrant the running costs given what my current b7 offers.......so

I'm over 5 years with the b7 and considering a change into a one does all fairly well kinda motor,my mileage is split between my b7 tdi and the RS of which only 5k ish a year is in the RS,given it can't have a tow bar it's weekend time is even more limited when we go out on bikes I've found myself seriously considering a fast diesel to do everything with some economy,if anyone can think of very good motor or has run any on my list I'd like to hear your honest thoughts, thanks in advance

In the same boat here! Considering going 535d as i just dont use the RS4 to warrant having it. Remapped they push out like 350bhp and 500lb/ft

I ran a 335D M Sport. In another league to any Golf I've driven. Fun for a diesel as the chassis, handling, balance and steering are superb.

A5 or a6 3.0 tdi.

Fantastic car, very capable of doing everything.

I have an A4 avant 3.0 tdi with 360bhp but that's another story.

My dad has an 06 3.0 TDi A6 avant that he has had from new (done 120k plus) and that's been AmD mapped since new and it's never missed a beat, auto suits them best, manual is hard work

The golf gtd mk7 looks really good although not driven one. I have a 7r and love it and to be honest I think the gtd looks better still.
The 535s are a fantastic car, like already said they are a league or two above the golf

For someone on a performance car forum, the '35D Bimmers are diesels that are actually fun to drive, and as such, probably more appropriate to what you're after IMO. The A4/6 are great cars, too. They will waft you about comfortably, I had a black edition A4 2.0 TDI company car, and although it is an outgoing model (new one due next year) it was a still a much nicer place to be than my sister's current F10 M Sport BMW, but in the BMW you can have a bit of a laugh on a windy road (yes, in a 2.0 diesel). You won't in the A4 or A6. (I've also had, a 3.0 TDI Avant 204 S Line). Again, comfortable, even in S Line spec the suspension wasn't too hard IMO. I was smoking an SQ5 recently, the new 3.0 biturbo diesel engine is epic, not sure about the enhanced noise, though!

I'm out in a golf on Saturday,I'm not expecting to be impressed with performance but they really look well inside and out, there 30k new with a few toys and used there still 26 ish, alot for a golf! Strong residuals though.

The bmw's have been catching my eye for some time, engines are awesome but need nice spec for the interior to look well.I hope to try one soon!

What did the 335d return in the real world? 40mpg average?

I've previously run both a 335d M-Sport auto and a manual 123d M-Sport which were both the twin turbo versions. The 335d was re-mapped and managed to average 32mpg and the 123d was standard and returned 43 MPG. They offer great performance for everyday use but they're certainly no RS, AMG or ///M as they just lack that extra refinement. There is a reason for those niche divisions existence!

The steering weight was nice but the feel was a little lacking, however the suspension on both was designed around Runflat tyre technology and was dire in my opinion. Made marginally better by fitting normal Michelin Pilot Sport tyres but in truth the Run Flat Technology ethos spoilt both cars. Interiors were nice places to be; I found the i-Drive intuitive and far better than Audi's MMI. Reliability was ok but not trouble free on both as the 335d needed one new Turbo after 12k and two 19" wheels due to cracking. The 123d needed a timing chain tensioner and crankshaft oil seal after 45k, it also suffered badly from clutch judder which BMW tried to fix by updating engine mapping and saying rev it higher to pull away - i.e. slip the clutch.

Would I own another - Possibly but only if the situation dictated that I needed a diesel and secondly, if they ever manage to design a good looking car again.

Glad it's not just me seeing the sense of some of the latest breed of diesels,The b7 is the best car I've owned and has the title for the longest if kept a car.Lets see what test drives deliver.

I was seriously looking at a e9x 335D - twin turbo insane amounts of torque and I think they're a good looking car in coupe. Doesn't sound *too* bad for a diesel either. Would be almost opposite characteristics of our v8 though with everything happening at like 2500!!. The RS doesn't wake up until you get to 6000 :)

But... it's still a beamer.

Gonna stick with my RS another year.

I changed to a RRS. SdV6 it was a forced change but not an unpleasant one. Do I miss the RS4 you bet I do, but not my passengers they prefer the comfort and my changed driving style. It was a sad day when blue thunder went a brilliant car

But the dark knight is very practicable can tow and drop the suspension and raise it.

When you've had a petrol tuned high revving engine you will miss it if you get a diesel.

Low rev range and they sound <beep> period....and you get it all over your hands when filling up!

Petrol FTW.

Diesel love in is of concern. Diesel is the dark side, add BMW too and it's squared.

But the low down power delivery of a diesel is actually part of the attraction for me,in the real world your ready to make swift progress instantly, quite the opposite of the new RS4 which you have to wake it up n drop a few cogs.It seems it not just me pondering the move,I'm yet to satisfy myself on the bmw front regarding rear wheel drive though I have to admit.my theory is that I might be better driving a newer pretty quick car all of the time rather than a very quick one now and again.
