Cold start - mornings

Post by WilkinsonRS4 » Thu Apr 24, 2014 1:36 am

Why is it RS4s are crappy from morning cold starts!?
I've got mine remapped and I turn the engine on first thing in the morning and I've got to wait 20/30 secs before the revs calm down before I can pull away, even then it drives lumpy till you get going, why are these machines so bad early in the morning!?
Modified standard exhaust Modified deflapped inlet manifold ported and polished
Head and valve decoke Performance K&N panel filter. Remapped. Lowered slightly (20mm) on KW performance springs Widened on 10mm spacers.

What map (if any) are you running - My MRC stage 2 runs fine from cold - a little lumpy but definatley usable immediately post button press. Have you had the coilpacks replaced?

I'd get that checked out, mine runs spot on when cold - defo an issue there. Even if it was mapped, it shouldn't affect the cold start.

Mine before the stage 2 MRC map and after cold starts were and are just fine. If anything, the map has made it slightly better; the cold start 20-30 second wait is almost non-existent. Coil packs maybe?

VCDS scan and maybe get it checked out. What map do you have if any?

Mine seems fine most of the time because by the time I drive off the driveway/manoeuvre out of a space it is fine. However, when it is cold (engine and outside temp) and I pull straight out of a car park space it does stutter and hold back a bit. By the time I get to the exit it is fine or if I had to reverse or 3 point turn to get out of a space first it is warmed up by then and fine. It literally is the first 10 seconds of turning on. Only ever noticed it after my remap. I assumed it was something to do with the SAI that I had removed at the same time.

It could be that the lambda sensor(s) is(are) done. I had one replaced and car runs much smoother on cold starts. I also get little better mpg than before.

Mines fine pre and post MRC cold start map.
Sounds like you have a problem. Take it back to whoever mapped it.

Do any of the people who say their cars are fine have their SAI removed? And do you pull away immediately from a cold start within 2 seconds of it starting and not crawl away? Like I said, if I'm parked in a space or on driveway I'd never notice it so some of you might just not have noticed because of where you park.

Mine still has the SAI - I pull away after the 10 seconds and its fine. Having said that, I've pulled away immediately and never noticed it to be lumpy or difficulty... I think the MRC stage 2 map helps a lot...

Mine's standard but I've never had a problem. I just wait for the fast idle to drop back then drive away and everything's fine.

My one used to run a bit rough on start up until I changed out the PCV valve.
