Water Leak in drivers footwell :(

Post by irishmike » Wed Apr 16, 2014 9:38 pm

So I had a few electrical issues and just found out that I have a water leak into the drivers footwell (unfortunate name :( )
Now the mats or carpet are not damp, but if you take out the carpet panel the foam below is cold and damp.
I do have a sunroof so that was my first thought, however I remembered back to when I bought the car and I had copped a slight issue with the roof drainage strip on the drivers side.
It was not sealed behind the windscreen and I had asked to get it fixed, turns out it wasn't, or not properly as it's out again

See pic below, now I reckon this could be the cause, salesman (Whom I asked to get it fixed) says not however. He reckons that it's not a real seal and shouldn't matter...

Thoughts??....

Mostly likely behind the fire wall there are two train plugs down there that get blocked with crap, its a common problem on B5 B6 and B7's

sorry, my bad,

the fuse/ ecu box is on the passenger side and gets broken sometimes when removed as there is a screw at the back which is a pita to get to.

yes can use a metal coat hanger to clean them out

take off the drivers wiper, lift up scuttle tray, use torx driver to remove screws, put screwdriver through wiper hole to get at rear screw on cover

Came across this interesting site when googling my issue, seems like there was a case filed in the US and Audi/VW paid up for damage!

Car was in today getting it looked at.
There was a bolt lose on the Ebox and water got in that way. Seal was gone too.

They want €800 to remove and dry the carpet!
Its just the sound deading that's damp underneath. Tempted to just get a dehumidifier and hope that solves it.

If they have stopped the leak it will just dry out, wrong time of year but put you blowers on but just the floor blowers oh and get a old towel to mop up any excess. Better still get a carpet cleaner and use the suction part to get the excess water up.

Thing I'd that I cannot see or feel any water or damp patches.
It's all under the carpet in the sound deadining.
Not sure if that would dry itself out...

I had a similar water leak a couple of times in an 8P S3 (caused by bad installation of a Tracker), which the dealer (Camberley Audi) dried out using some workshop blower heaters pointed in the (open) doors. You need some serious heat to get through the carpet to the (very thick) layer of sound insulation underneath, I doubt that the car heater will be powerful enough.

Mate those blowers on full blast and heating set to max is not bad I can assure you. All I would say is check there us no module under the seat if so immediate action will be needed.
