Time for an RS4

It's RS4 time and I'm weighing up a few options. I can't make my mnd up over a saloon or avant so the best deal will sway me. With my sensible head on, I've been close to buying a 3 litre TDI A5 a few times now but I know I'll regret it so an RS4 it shall be!

There are some nice looking examples currently advertised, a couple private and a couple with dealers. What are peoples views on the mileage, number of owners etc. I've viewed a car with 4 owners, sub 40k mileage and cars at a similar price with 1-3 owners, 55-60k. I'm thinking both in terms of the likely costs in the near future and 55k-60k miles is obviosuly time to consider some of the bigger jobs + also the longer term value. I expect 5+ owners will start to put people off but if I kept a 55-60k mileage car for 2 years it'd be at 70-80k miles and so I'm trying to work out what to go for.

Look forward to hearing your views!

Depends on budget, id go for a 1 owner forum car if possible, read all their posts etc. you have no idea what a 1 owner audi supplied used car has done to be honest, and would pay a premium.

I cannot say anything really as i bottled it and bought a 3litre diesel!

Hi Junior
I have been in your position regarding what to purchase and it was hands down on an RS4. I have had an S5 & E46 M3 and always looked "up" at the RS4 so decided to buy one with a view to keeping it for many years. The posts on this forum together with advice and honest replies to questions lead me to a 4 week hunt for the car. I eventually found one that's had 2 owners from new, current owner has had it 4 years (affluent guy) and the car has had no expense spared. I also considered the type of driving that the car has been subjected to and this one has had a mix of motorway (320 miles per week) from a-b aback FASH ( I called the service department where the car has been serviced from new) they gave me the full low down on the cars history and even offered to email me a print out of the history. I wasn't in any doubt about the car once I saw it in the flesh as had looked at 7 others and 5 were a train wreck and the other 2 over priced and not as described in the ad's. My advice to you would be to look around and take your time. There are a lot of these out there for sale and also a lot of shyte to be had, however go and look at them as it will build your knowledge of the marque and when a "good one" comes up you will suss it straight away. One thing that's a must......HPI check. Please don't do anything without checking out the car before you view it. May be teaching you to suck eggs but I know of 2 people that got seriously fcuked when buying a car. I relate it to a woman.....you see the pussy and become blinkered.....before you know it she has fleeced ya and done the offski......no different to the scumbags that are lurking out there and if you become blinkered it will ultimately end in tears.

Im sure this advice will be added too and your in good hands listening to the chaps on this forum as they have been their and done it

Wouldn't be that bothered about number of owners or mileage tbh, as long as you can tick off expensive stuff such as DRC, oil cooler, brake discs, clutch/flywheel, maybe carbon clean.

Would you go for a 60k miler with the jobs done against a 35k miler without? I guess its about weighing up price (similar), cost of works and future value? They're all clean cars, two higher mileage with dealers and two lower mileage private.

60k's not high for a 6yr old car!

The market moves on at the same time.

Two lines of thought for number of owners ;
A)
1 owner = easy to trace history, understand everything from new
loads of owners - hard to trace anything, could've been owned by some right tossers

B)
1 owner - could've got lazy and not looked after car. Also, could get complacent with cars performance and driven it over its limit regularly
Loads of owners - when an owner gets a new car, the novelty value means you tend to spend out on it, so could've had its whole life wanting for nothing and being driven as a pride and joy

Six of one, half a dozen of the other

In my experience people tend to look after their cars better when new, after a year or 2 they tend to neglect them a bit more so high numbers of owners to me is a good thing as long as you get the car checked out to make sure it is not a dog that keeps getting passed on.

I would agree with this, I am the 4th owner in 6 years but the car has been pampered. All the service history backs this up, but in the end I bought on condition. Does the SH match up, does it drive tight, has it had work done recently (tyres, brakes etc)...if this all adds up go for it.

Mine has had 3 owners and 85k. It is like new! As said though, do the research! I checked every service with audi and even rang the previous, previous owner! It had all major work done and has every single receipt totalling thousands!
