my rs4 has a general whine in all gears which reading into sounds quite normal (bit like a super charger) but more noticably in 1st gear when off gas and coasting with clutch down i have a throbbing whiney noise almost like a dodgy bearing or something. does anyone else have this? garage say its normal but i dont think it sounds normal :audibash:

cheers

anyone?

Moved on slightly now. Garage have heard the sound and says they think its not normal. Ive got an audi extended warranty and asked if it would be covered. They said it was probably a bearing making the noise but in order to investigage they would need to take apart the gearbox. Heres the problem, if the bearing is as they would consider "warn" then its not covered and neither is the work carried out to open up the box to investigate it, but if its failed then they will cover the costs on the warranty. Now i dont really want to take the risk as its going to cost a lot just to check the bearing out... what to do? Bit miffed at the warranty

I would call Audi Warranty and ask the same question you have above, they are the only ones who can give you a confirmed answer.

Yup its a gamble not worth taking given the absolutely ridiculous labour rates,if they deem it not covered you could of had a used box installed for less than they will charge to remove yours and investigate, the audi extended warranty is one of the better ones but doesnt offer the total comfort many assume it does, especially given the price and whats in the grey area!! Alot falls down to the individual dealers knowledge and approach, hence its a lottery! Someone on here had a box fitted for 1200 all in if memory serves me correctly. They rarely go wrong so bargain hard at the breakers,id be reluctant at any dealer doing a box rebuild under any circumstances, they simply will not have much if any experiance at all with them.Sure they can follow the manual but at 120 an hour a used but unopened box is a far better bet imo
