Discs and pads and mileage questions

Hi all,

I am a newbie to be (Avant).

I have a few questions. The car I am looking to buy is full history, all recall, but with 60k on the clock. How are people finding their avants at those mileages?

Secondly, I know this car will need new front discs/pads in about 5k. Its had rears but will need the fronts. What sort of price would that be?

Cheers all

Get in touch with Stoke Audi for the discs and pads if you plan to go OEM, they seem to be the best on price.

I got a set of front discs and pads for £749.00 inclusive of vat :biggrin3:

Prices have gone up recently. Stoke Audi will be £800.40 + delivery for front disks and pads.

I got my local Audi dealer to match Stoke Audi's price, got them fitted, bedded in and a brake fluid change for £1069.

+1 for Stoke Audi.
Set of front discs £528 + delivery.

Front pads £272, not sure how that compares to elsewhere as I've never bought OEM pads.

Some people for for EBC yellow stuff pads. They are cheaper to buy than OEM, and either eqaul to or better in performance than OEM. I have these pads and can't tell you if they are are any better than OEM or not. They con't feel any worse so in my mind definately buy them again considering the price difference. Having said that, the garage I bought the car from noticed it needed new pads all round the day I was supposed to pick it up and they changed them all so not sure what pads they fitted. I'd be surprised if they were OEM as it was not an Audi dealer, could have bee yellow stuff pads hence why I can't tell any difference.

Yellow pads form ebay, £157:

I've used this seller before and can recommend them.

Alternatively speak ot one of the site sponsers Revolution / MRC / Unit20.

Also, 65K seems an odd milage to change disks. In me experience they generally last 40-45k miles unless they have seen a lot of track useage. I know someone who said their discs last less than a set of pads but this is not normal.

Mike

My Avant had to have new disks and pads at 30k miles due to the wear pins on the (earlier design) OEM pads. Currently on 65k miles and still on 2nd set of disks and pads. They'll probably need changing by 70k miles.

Dave, If you had to change your first set early at 30k then I'd expect the next set (assuming no problems) to last 40k taking it to 70k, so sounds right given the trouble with your first set.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I've fitted disc pads on most of my other cars, are RS4s the same? Reasonably easy to fit?

I'm just looking back at the service receipts I got with my car. Front brake discs and pads were replaced at 24,116 miles. I've just replaced them at 70,000 miles which ties in with the 40-45k miles that MikeFish mentioned.

At the service in January my Audi dealer advised that discs and pads are 75% worn and quoted £2k to replace
Mileage is 45,500.

Presumably the discs cracked or something? Otherwise that doesn't sound possible.

Why are the rears more expensive than fronts from Stoke? I'm at 43k and looking to replace all discs/pads. I got pads pads from Revolution, now need discs. If that AP group buy comes down to less than £600 I'll probably go for them, if not it'll be OEM from Stoke.

The rears were cheaper until recently but have recently gone up, but the fronts seem to have remained the same price. They did a group buy for us a while ago and although the price has gone up since they still remain at a very good price. Maybe due to the sheer numbers they must be selling.

I agree it sounds wrong but they said something like the pads were wearing the discs down too quick. I think they were standard pads too and made a comment about some OEM discs being made of cheese. It was on here somewhere so you might be able to find it still.

I swap discs and pads myself on my cars - are RS4s standard to swap? Impact driver, rubber mallet, some big allen keys, etc?
