hi guys

I have recently developed a knocking sound from the front right wheel, it only happens when the car is turning a tight left corner

and 'knocks' once per revolution of the wheel

it stops again as soon as the steering straightens up

also it doesnt do it straight away only after the car has been driven for a bit

and its loud enough to hear with the window up ( just )

the rest of the time the car appears to be driving as it should

anyone got any idea's pls ?

cheers

I have this on mine always when I'm just turning off the drive.

Think it's standard for theses cars as remember seeing people post about this before...but I'm sure someone will be along to confirm.

yer all rs4s do this (full lock, slow speeds) but it sounds like s4bandit is describing something else.

Don't think it sounds normal its too loud and I've not noticed it before it also doesn't do it when the car has just been started , ref the drive shaft is there anyway I could check to see if this may be the case ? What other symptoms would a drive shaft problem have ? It doesn't do it when the wheel is turning right and its only the right front that makes the sound not the left ? Ref the sound it could be described as a tap as well does that help ?

Could be a worn CV joint?

Every S4 I've owned, as well as my RS4, has clicked on full lock (left or right) especially when it's cold (when you also get tyre block "jumping"). So IMHO some clicking on full lock is normal, but if it happens when you're not on full lock then I'd say it's not normal.

when i went to view my first rs4, the seller told me that the car made a knocking noise, described exactly the same in this thread. When I went for a test drive, I did hear it too, it only did it once and then went away. It didn't sound too healthy.

Not really helping, just throwing in my 2p :)

Sounds more like the pads rattling in the calliper to me, dose it still do it if you press your brakes slightly?

Cheers I'll try with the brake pedal pushed in and let you know :-)

Would it not do it all the time if it was that though rs4mav ? It doesn't do it when I first start the car only when it's been driven for a bit ? Cheers

Not in my experience no, sometimes it can take a little bit of driving before the pads slowly eases away from the disc if the disc is slightly out of true. Once you start to turn into a corner which side loads the wheel and hub/disc, this then can cause the disc to catch the pads on a high spot (resulting in pad rattling) until brake is depressed again.

In the past all i have ever needed to do is

Wheel off
Pads out.
Clean pads and stainless shim if one fitted and calliper.
Small amount of copper slip between back side of pad/ shim / and calliper piston.
Small amount of copper slip on top and bottom of pad in the area where it is contact with calliper.
Re-assemble.
Always worked for me on many different types of cars.
Hope you have the same success .
