Considering 2010 RNSE - Now Complete with Pics/Comments

Post by j1sgo » Thu Nov 29, 2012 6:18 pm

Hey All,

Just looking into getting one of these before Christmas, I have looked through the posts and as far as i can tell its a fairly easy swap, I am hoping that
some of you Gents far more in the know than I can help on my queries below:

1. I know VCDS is required for something but if the items i have are already coded in for the existing RNSE will the 2010 just plug and play? - I have bluetooth, cd changer and aftermarket digital TV, should all these work ok in the new unit?

2. Where best to purchase?
I found this one that looks good as i 100% do not want the glossy surround. Has anyone purchased from here and if so whats the lowest offer they accepted?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261072527536? ... 1423.l2649

3. Selling the old RNSE - Do you sell without a faceplate or with the A3 face plate? how much can i expect to get? - I know you can get some 2010 units with the a4 surround that would be easier to sell on, however the only ones i can find have glossy surrounds - can this be changed?

4. I know about the advantages of the 2010 SD card slots but just before i re-format my itunes library to Mpeg in readyness can i confirm that the 2010 still doesnt read AAC files?

5. What are the speed camera location warnings like and can they be updated? or is this just on the dvd?

Cheers, Steve

1. As far as I know you will still need VCDS to tell it it is plugged into an A4 otherwise it won't work properly if it thinks its connected to an A3. I think typical issue are switching itself off after half an hour even with the ignition on.

3. You will need to swap your RS4 surround with the A3 one (I didn't click the link but I'm assuming the advert was for a new rns-e with A3 surround. So you I'd advertise it with an A3 surround but give them the option to receive it without a surround.

4. I think it is still mp3 only, better get some else to confirm.

Steve

I've done it - it's well worth it. Not difficult, just a bit fiddly, so you need some patience with all the little screws and connectors and the like.

Have a search on the forum for RNSe 2010 and you'll find lots of guidance - you also need the faceplate instructions on the Lamborghini forum (again, you'll find that in the posts on here somewhere)

But in the meantime re your questions:

1. If it's given the right settings in advance then yes you can install without VCDS, but if anything's not right then something won't work. The digi TV might have an unusual setting so that could be a 'trial and error' one. Also, you need VCDS to re-code your 'old' one to A3 settings before you sell. So overall it's a good idea if you at least have access to it - I'm sure you can find a fairly local forum member who'll help you out

2. The one you've found there is as good as any - basically Audi seem to have semi official refurb outlets in Eastern Europe, and that looks like one of them. That's a fair price. You can also find the "193G" version, which is exactly the same as that one advertised but has a gloss black screen surround, and was produced primarily for black edition cars - your call as to which you prefer

3. Simplest to put the A3 faceplate on the old unit, code it to A3 settings as sell for A3 owners, along with the GPS puck & cable that you'll get with the 2010 one. I did exactly that and got £250 which I thought was fair

4. MP3 only I'm afraid, so don't go changing any of your tunes!

5. Unfortunately the speed camera setting doesn't work in the A4, as the car was never wired for it - you can select it on the RNse but they won't show up on screen. Pity, but not the end of the world

Good luck!

I have just done this from a rnsd in my b6 s4.... You will need vcds as the unit settings are stored on the unit, not on the car, so you will need to code the rnse for a4 settings and Bose etc if you have it...

I purchased mine from the same guy! He actually took a 193g and swapped the faceplate for me to an a4 unit so I didn't have to worry about it.... He was very good with me and would use him again, took 1 day to arrive from when he posted...

It was in the car when i purchased it so not sure the exact set up, i know it has ariels in the front and rear windows and that is in aftermarket system but thats it sorry. The bose sub in the boot has also been upgraded with an external amp - very neet job so assume a proper audio firm carried out the work  sounds really good too.

Mike/Dalo - Cheers for the info Gents, sounds good i will be proceeding, i hopefully have access to VCDS. Shame about the speed cameras, wonder if there is a way?

Malice - maybe if i email him he may do the same for me :)

Unfortunately not, the speed camera feature needs commands on the Infotainment CAN bus that the B7 doesn't provide.

Worth considering swapping the CD changer to a CAN AMI (which fits in the same place in the glovebox) as this will give you either a decent iPod/iPhone music interface or you can attach a hard drive with all your music on (which is what I've done).

As PetrolDave says - AMI very nice to have, albeit a bit pricey at around £300

Also as PetrolDave says about speed camera - I know it doesn't work, but it needs PD to tell you why!

Given you've got a complicated sounding TV tuner and you think the Bose has been tweaked in some way, VCDS sounds like a dead cert, as there may be some non standard settings in your existing RNSe to make them work - basically your best starting point will be to read the settings on the existing unit and replicate them on the new one

Certainly like the sound/look of the CAN AMI if it wasnt for the cost, however i am happy enough using SD cards so will just look forward to being able to use the larger cards :D

Dalo - Agree on needing VCDS due to the points you raised :beerchug:

Is your car a 2006 ? I noticed the ESP/windowshade/card holder buttons don't have the trim on them the 2007-2008 cars. Wondered if this was a 2006 thing? My 2007 S4 and 2008 RS4 both had the shiny metallic looking trim strip on the buttons. I think I like them better black.

Finished the 2010 install tonight along with the RS4 backlit blank plate, really happy with the resuts (excuse the phone pics)

General use - big big imporvement on the screen, more modern looking and clearer, RNSE seems generally smother and quicker to use too.

SD Cards - I bought 2nr class 10, 32GB sandisk SD cards, I can now have the amount of folders i had wanted but couldnt fit on the old rnse, also the speed of browsing the folders is much quicker than the old 4gb cards.

Sat Nav - Much clearer and way, way quicker

Digital TV - is like HD in comparison with the old screen  - only downside on my TV ATM is the top bit of the screen is blurred for some reason? - I think the digi box needs to be adjusted maybe because of the increase of pixels, can anyone elaborate on this? i didnt have time to investigate so one for later i guess.

P.S the RS4 blank plate looks great, pictures dont do it justice, it fits well and looks the same colour as the OEM buttons. Plus no wiring, it comes with a piggy back connector block that you fit between the ESP button and connector
