I thought ZZ Top might confuse you - Velcro Fly has to be one of my Top 10 tracks.

Does anyone know if it's possible, please?

Has anyone 'upgraded' to the 2010+ RNSe?

Post by DazN » Tue Mar 20, 2012 5:06 pm

Just fitted mine, took a lot longer than I thought but worth it.

I swapped the front surround for the old one and used the new silver buttons. Now it's in I'm thinking I should have kept with the old buttons, oh well.

Looks a lot better, no RS4 startup logo but that's fine, all working with blue tooth etc

I was thinking about a button change too, but I couldn't face any more of those bloody tiny screws!

I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to my question from the previous posts, but just to be sure...

If I get myself a 193 spec RNS-E, swap the faceplate, connect the new RNS-E in exactly the same way as the OE one, possibly re-code thru VCDS (may need to ask favour on that one as I don't have it...), then everything will be fine, and my factory CD changer, Bluetooth and Bose will all work - and all that I'll lose is the RS4 logo on start up?

I'd love to have the 32gb card capacity and the better screen & functionality of a 2010 RNS-E - I had one in 2011 A3, and if nothing else, the speed limit warning function was very handy!

Cheers!

Yes.

"swapping the face plate" isn't quite that simple though, there's about 30 screws you need to remove and then get it all back together. I have no previous knowledge and did mine, ended up with the 2011 unit and RS4 surround, then a 2007 unit with an Audi A3 surround, both working perfectly.

The unit in mine now is superb, 2 x 32gb cards are great to have and all I've lost is the RS4 startup. Bluetooth, CD changer (well iPod) and everything works as before.

Thanks DazN - just what I needed to know - I'm getting a twitchy eBay finger, as I guess others are too!

Apologies if I've missed this, but can someone summarise the improvements from the 2010+ RNSE compared to the standard fit RS4 version? As far as I can tell:

- Better screen resolution
- higher capacity and better SD cards (handle 32Gb each rather than 4Gb and also handles SDHC cards)
- slightly easier menu navigation - eg the Media button

Anything else?

The other thing is one of the earlier posts said all these units off ebay come with copied disks - presumably to avoid burning out the laser you either need to revert to the old (out of date in my case) disk, or also shell out on a pukka current disk?

Thanks

Correct - I had a 2011 RNS-E in my previous A3, and there are also some more POI options - speed limits for example, which was sometimes handy (but guess it wouldn't get the location data from a 2006/7 disc).

In my experience the "old" nav discs will work with the newer RNS-E, but you'll obviously be limited to the accuracy of your existing map data

The other big thing that doesn't seem to have been mentioned is that these newer units should be properly iPod compatible with the right Audi AMI add-on - not cheap though at nearly £350 I think - I personally wouldn't bother with that though, when a pair of 32gb cards can be had for about a tenth of that

If you don't want to swap the faceplate, you would be just as well buying an RNSe 2010+ WITH the A4 faceplate already on it (i.e. work done for you). It will cost probably 100 pounds more, but you will also be able to sell your old RNSe for 100 pounds more than one without a faceplate.

The speed limit warning doesn't work when you fit a 2010+ RNS-E into a B7 - the messages it needs are not present on the Infotainment CAN bus.

I stand corrected.... bit of a shame but IMO the other benefits make the change more than worthwhile

I have noticed you can have a compass displayed on the DIS, not sure if that was there on the old one.
