Re: Broken into and car stolen
Good news you got her back,
Do you know if they found the RS abandoned or using the tracker, i ask cos this is the second thread in the last few months that the tracker was useless (maybe due to being found or put underground out of GPS reach)
Is it worth having a tracker now that these scum know an RS4 is more than likely to have one?
Ive only owned my RS for a few months and was humming and haying if i should take up the subscription, im not convinced i should!!

I like the dog idea. When I was growing up my parents had a string of mellow labradors / retrievers that were excellent alerting them to strangers. That's the only time they barked. No training required.
IMHO...
This is a public forum. Anyone can read it. I personally think that if you have a tracker you shouldn't post about it or put Stickers on your window either: they'll jam it, then tear your car apart looking for it. Keep it to yourself and hope that it'll help you get you back your car when it's gone. I don't think they are deterrents any more.
Or don't bother with a tracker at all. Almost as good.
Thoughts?

Re: Broken into and car stolen
Tracker should work on radio frequency, so no need for GPS unless you get the fancy "Locate" system. Radio isn't defeated as easily as GPS trackers, so should be less likely that the car can just be hidden in a multi-storey or in a tunnel.Ranger Rico wrote: or put underground out of GPS reach

Hey MartayMcFly,
I went on the tracker website and they are saying the VHF system u can have fitted does exactly as you say, its just the OP mentioned there was no tracker signal once reported so whats the point in it!!
, unless using a GPS system is now seen as obsolete!
Im not convinced that 295 a year subscription is worth it, better spent on other anti-theft devices methinks

Re: Broken into and car stolen
Anyone who is prepared to break in to your house and steal the keys will also know how to defeat/block a Tracker type system, so IMHO they are a complete waste of money.

Indeed, and I know of at least 2 instances where big scary guard dogs were killed/drugged in the break-in.PetrolDave wrote:Anyone who is prepared to break in to your house and steal the keys will also know how to defeat/block a Tracker type system, so IMHO they are a complete waste of money.

Re: Broken into and car stolen
Unfortunately we all drive cars that attract professional car thieves rather than opportunists.
Maybe simple deterrents like steering wheel clamps or a Driveway Lockpost are the way forward.
Or you could move to Aberdeenshire where the only car crimes are the ones WE commit

I tend to agree with PD on this, not sure ill bother with the tracker next year, very disappointed with the service as well, car is back after 6k worth of repairs to the interior and a new set of alloys, still needs a few more bits doing before ill be happy

Thats why I went for the B6 S4 and debadged it immediatelyUnfortunately we all drive cars that attract professional car thieves rather than opportunists

Problem is I want a milltek and that may give the game away

But for me other than 2 extremely sensitive ( I reckon they are some sort of dog guru's ) fell terriers who seem to bark before we even get anyone opening the garden gate ? seconds later you hear the gate go which is a bit freaky sometimes.
But they key/s are well stashed ( not to the point of my eyes watering though ) and thats about the best you can do.
My mate had his GSXR nicked when it was 3 days old out of his garage, it was locked to the floor and pinned to the wall by a Volvo T5 estate. When they got up in the morning the garage door was peeled back like a piece of paper and the damage to the volvo went like this ---
Front bumper ripped off, grill smashedm bonnet dented and scraped, windscreen fecked, roof dented and scraped sunroof smashed, rear spoiler ripped off. Thats after cutting thru the lock ( which was a chainlink from an old crane ) with a hacksaw which was still there. So one 2 year old volvo written off and a 7k bike gone without trace ( and thats was datatagged aswell )
Like I say if they want it bad enough they will get it

Re: Broken into and car stolen
Do it - an go non res - someone pointed out a while back (PG or someone on here) that crooks won't want a LOUD non res Milltek as a get away car!linkman72 wrote:Thats why I went for the B6 S4 and debadged it immediatelyUnfortunately we all drive cars that attract professional car thieves rather than opportunists![]()

Which is why I don't hide the keys. If they're prepared to break into the house to steal the car keys in the first place I don't think they'll just leave again quietly if they can't find them.linkman72 wrote:Like I say if they want it bad enough they will get it![]()
Better to lose the car than have them wake you and your family to politely ask where you've hidden the keys.
Re: Broken into and car stolen
Well I hide my keys and if they want to come upstairs where my insomnia and 18inch machete will pursuade them to leave quickly

Ideally of course I'd smash their skulls in the second they crossed the threshold. But in reality the homeowner would almost certainly either come off worse or end up serving time for any harm done to the invaders.
As much as I love my car I'm not prepared to go to hospital or jail trying to stop someone taking it.

Re: Broken into and car stolen
We got broken into a few months ago - a local drug addict after cash - and when we had the visit from the Crime Prevention Officer he advised us to hide the keys even though he saw the RS4 and knew of the usual method of taking them.BillTheButcher wrote:Which is why I don't hide the keys.
