Hrm. What's with all the pitting on the back of the left-hand valve in the "after" photo :/

Is that tool damage or something?

I saw that too and was quite alarmed when they came through on my email. I spoke to Doug and apparently it's doesn't happen to all but it's normal. It's not tool damage.

Yours (http://forum.rs246.com/viewtopic.php?f= ... lit=walnut) looks very smooth but the almost nodule type globules on the rear valve is what your referring to, right?
