DIY, Front brake pads and disc replacement
Re: DIY, Front brake pads and disc replacement
Ahh yes they can be a nightmare to get out. Hope you get it sorted.
Money can't buy you love, but it can buy you a well sorted racecar

Man, I also took on the job of changing front discs and pads, and like yours the pad retaining pins were a nightmare, I had 3 that just wouldn't budge!!!esp_mm-270 wrote:Well, had a go friday and its booked in for weds. Failed at the first hurdle, n/s/f upper pad pin was friction welded or jammed in. Looks like it was a problem last time the pads were done as the point of the pin was flattened (no copper slip in there either)Spose I could've purchased a dremel and cut it out but I had gotten the hump by then

Oh well, will be done soon and she'll be back in business(Meaning love my Audi)

I ended up nipping the brake hoses, removing the calipers on both sides, taking them down to the local garage where they had to apply some heat and a lot of hammering, finally they came out!!
So back up to the house it was, bang the calipers back on the car, bleed the brakes and Hey Presto all sorted!!!!
I'll do anything not to give the stealers money, and I made sure all the pins were well copper slipped. I'm actually that paranoid about having the pins seizing again I actually remove the pins now and then and copper slip them again!!!

Re: DIY, Front brake pads and disc replacement
I had a couple stuck pins when I done mine. What I did was leave them as they were and simply remove the pads from the inside. Save buggering a about and damaging anything.

Hi There,
Just a little tip I have used over the years when changing brake pads,
When the brake fluid level rises as you open the calliper pots I use a small ( empty )plastic bottle say around 250ml with nozzle and what you do is squeeze all of the air from the bottle stick the nozzle into the brake fluid keeping the nozzle submerged and let the bottle suck out the excess! wham no mess, then providing the bottle is (very clean) you can re - use the fluid if needed...when the level settles
Cheers
Richard
