Provided it's an approved container you can have a petrol "can" in the car. The leagl limit is 23 litres if it's metal or 5 litres if it's plastic - BUT most garages will only allow you to fill one 10 litre metal or up to two 5 litre plastic containers due to the planning/licensing restrictions.

I have a 5 litre green plastic one which I taken with us whenever we're going on holiday.

it goes to zero with 1 gallon in the tank

so how far you can go beyond 0 depends on how you drive after that point

drive like miss daisy and your looking 25 miles max ... drive like a nutter, prob 8 miles

will keep checking

one of the reasons I am slightly concerned is I am not sure the guys at Walton fixed the gauge 100% right.
now, I have the feeling the gauge could be showing a slightly lower amount of fuel than the actual one, but the computer has the correct one (still say I should be doing another 140 miles, with 60 just clocked).
the two measurements don't seem to coincide by at least 50 miles, as I will be soon with needle showing 1/2 tank with what I think will be 70/75 miles done by then

I would say that was roughly right, my middle 3 rd seems to deplete slower than the 1st or last 3 rd and totals at 200 ish miles

When you say it goes beyond 0 do you mean the gauge being at the bottOm of the reserve or do you mean when the computer shows 0 miles left to go?

Hello to those who remember be....I'm back on!

I've just changed jobs and have gone from stop/start for 4 miles and then 2 miles of foot tothe floor and getting about 180-200 miles from a tank. Now I'm driving 20 miles each way and although it's country lanes, I actually barely stop, so a lot of cruising in 6th. I now get between 240 and 260 to a tank....quite a difference!!

can someone please confirm how aligned the gauge and computer should be in terms of readings?
does the mid-point of the gauge correspond to half tank in real terms, or does the second half (the left side) count for more (I believe it should, as it incorporates the reserve)?

and did you guys find that the gauge is less conservative than the computer (that is it appears emptier than it is)?

I have the feeling I have wasted £240 to have my gauge "fixed" by the knob-heads at Audi Walton and they might have fixed it without recalibrating it!! :knob:

Not in my experience (not on ANY car I've ever owned...) - the gauge drops slowly to 1/2 and then rapidly after that.

I don't treat the gauge as more than a "rough guess", the computer is pretty accurate in my experience.

this seems to contradict even more what I am seeing, as it would appear the gauge should be slower in the second half to match what the computer is telling me - do you think the jokers @ Walton might have missed to re-calibrate the gauge after finishing their work?

OK. I guess you meant you "do" treat it as a guess. I am still not understanding how computer and gauge can be misaligned, as they should be both fed by the same senders right?

See http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.ph ... 8ED/8HE%29 maybe they have messed up the coding - see channels 29 to 33. There are 2 level sensors for quattro models, and there is a calibration for full and empty - maybe one of those is wrong?

AFAIK the computer only uses the level sensors when the level increases (i.e. you fill up), and uses it's estimates for fuel used to determine the mileage left - that means it's very possible for the gauge and the computer to significantly disagree.

thanks Dave. I don't really know how to check the calibration? you think is a thing maybe someone can help me out with at the May meet at Ace Cafe using VAGCOM?

the level sensors are the senders or are they something completely different?
anyway have you ever noticed any significant difference yourself? again, we are not talking about few miles, but more than 50 (half tank 70/75 miles vs predicted miles still to go 125)

I'm not going to be at the May meet, but it's an easy enough thing to do with VAG-COM.

Same thing, different name.

Not that amount of difference - which suggests to me that either the calibration is wrong or they messed up the coding by forgetting to tell it that you've got a quattro with the reduced tank capacity that implies (that could explain the 50 miles difference?).

Great
Would Any of these be fixable via Vagcom? The idea of going back to audi Walton repels me. Id rather be walked on my balls

They have even managed to charge me "by mistake" for the pump they've damaged. Still waiting for the refund.
Does anyone know of an effective way to place a complaint @ audi uk? In the recent years I haven't received such an appalling service anywhere else.

guys, while I wait for the meet up in 10 days when hopefully someone will be able to help me out with Vag-com and (hopefully) I only need a recalibration, should I trust the fuel gauge or the DIS range as they tell me quite different things?

I've ordered a 5Lt plastic tank but it's still on its way...
