Agree with you 100% Les - that's why its sits in it's cage rather than limping round town, and it stretches it's legs (and then some) in the open fields!

I couldn't give a damn about MPG, and have never once looked at that part of the DIS. What I do know is that it's utterly <beep> in central London (evidenced by big needle swings for sod all progress when I do use it round town) but the reason we use another car as a daily is -
Congestion charge free
Company car so no city scrape concerns
Family crap stays out of the RS
Short distances not good for the V8
Dare I say the Prius (fully loaded and pimped) is actually an easy place to crawl from A to Z - flame suit on!

I was simply saying to Arthur that what might be an ideal grocery-getting, round town car where he lives is the wrong fish, in the wrong pond over here. I think that's what you're saying as well...

Correct mate :biggrin3:

No comment on the Prius though :bash:
It's an Audi RS4 V8............. what else do you need to know!

Well there seems to be some borderline banter going on here!

This month I have to say I am thinking of MPG, as I've just spunked all my money buying the car! Lol

Seriously I have a trip to Plymouth to make from here in Leeds with my wife and kids to see my family, and I'm considering taking the RS over the family wagon to give it a decent run (and to see if any faults appear).

It's a good 320miles all motorway, my R32 would only make 275 miles on that trip so I'm wondering what the RS will do it in, do I cruise control it or not?!!

I certainly don't really want to be blowing £300 on fuel to be honest as funds are short this month for obvious reasons! Lol

On decant motorway runs, i get between 250 & 280 miles to the tank doing around 75 to 80, so not any significant difference to your R32 really.

My record is 340ish but that was with a big helping of 50mph roadwork + specs.

Cruise control is the anti-christ of mpg.
It does exactly what you don't want it to do. You may think what you lose going up hill you gain going down but the return is never anywhere near parity.

To properly hyper mile you have to plan actions in advance. So for example, if you are on a flat and you are approaching a up hill section then slowly add speed. then when you hit the hill you attempt to trade speed at a rate that will not reduce your speed too much by the time you reach the top of the hill. Opposite for down hill sections - you need to use the effect of gravity in that for all intensive purposes you car's mass has just decreased (I know it's nothing of the sort but the effect is the same). For a given amount of throttle you will accelerate faster. So build up as much speed as you dare (and of course are legally allowed). You need to accept that you'll be varying your speed by about 20-30 mph so you will piss off other road users.

Think of speed as a buffer with mpg - you can exchange it and fill it. A good aid is to use the instantaneous MPG figure. Aim for a target say 27 mpg... when it's higher than that you can apply more throttle, when lower you have to come off a bit.
Don't use sport mode - you need as much light throttle control as possible.
Oh, make sure your tyres are right up to what they should be too.

But even with that in mind... it's dull and boring. Not to mention Bam will confiscate your man card.

This thread's a lovely example of how a tongue in cheek comment can escalate :) And how English and American are two very different languages

Fuel - I'm getting something between 200 and 250 miles out of a tank. Maybe a smidge more. Largely empty country b-roads that do a passing impression of the 'ring. And every drop is enjoyed to the max.

0 mpg is possible, idling
infinite is possible, rolling down a hill with engine off
Wouldn't it have to be an infinite hill, do those exist? Also, if the engine is off whilst moving, would MPG be the correct measure, wouldn't the use of MPG require an engine to be running? Sorry, I don't possess an engineering degree so I'm just being curious.

BTW - if I point out that you're wrong, does that make me right?
no, infinite mpg can be for a finite period of time
just as 0 can be for the time you're at a stop light
logic is not your forte

why does the engine have to be running to measure mpg, why can't the gallons be 0? only distance needs covered in a machine that consumes fuel
you are still covering ground, so in most math systems something/nothing = infinite, where as nothing/something = 0
no, you are being an ass as usual, which in your case is infinite assitude, which I'm sure you confuse as being clever and something to be proud of
and trust me, I don't think anyone would mistake you for having any kind of education, let alone an engineering degree

only if I am wrong and you are right, which is not the case
and that precludes the cases we we are both 'right' (correct) or wrong (incorrect), which is another possibility in the set of options
you/me
right/wrong
wrong/right
right/right
wrong/wrong

For the last time, I'm not talking about mixed driving - I'm talking about crawling along. Your 4 miles this morning could typically take me 40 mins - that's certainly how long the 4 miles to my daughter's old school used to take at pick-up time, and hence why we run a hybrid for stuff like that. Admittedly a bridge was out (long term) but before that it was Knightsbridge works, since that Shepherd's Bush roundabout - there's always something...

again, if you are getting 10 mpg there is a problem with the car, or driving style, or both
4 miles in 40 minutes ~ 6 mph
how much fuel does the car use when idling? how many hours to drain the tank? you can see the fuel rate of delivery with the vagcom
again, even in those circumstances, no way, 10 mpg, or 8 in US gallons

that still doesn't make it 'the law', only entertainment, but if you feel compelled, compell away...sheep are like that

Having owned a V8 for the past 7 years the MPG item has never been high on my list, hence why i dont know what i get from a tank.

Having said the above since owning the car (19 months) and mixed driving, including 3 mile comute each day, and sprinted driving when ever i get the chance, my DIS shows an average MPG of 16.

Given that the tank holds 14.5 UK Gallons - this equates to 232 miles to the Tank.

Best i have seen on a motorway run was 24 MPG - this would have equated to 348 Miles to a tank if i had carried on for the whole tank.

If people are seriously only getting 150 miles from a tank then they must be driving it like they are at the ring each day.

I do around 5k miles a year.
Current: MK7 Golf R, Lapiz Blue 5 dr

what is a 'bam bam''?
is he trying to be 'cool'
is he over-compensating?
is he insecure?

heavy usage 16 mph, far off the 10 some are claiming
232 avg, far off the less than 150 some are claiming
all one has to do is look at the OBC 2
if they are getting less than 150: or the car is not running correctly

I asked you to stop posting in this thread once already to prove you were bored (it appears you weren't), now do the same for me (I'm so bored of this). That'll go to show how much I care about this pointless point you're trying to make and give the poor OP back his completely useless thread.

whom, not who
you sure as heck are broken, as is your position and your re-write

I never said the rest of the world is inferior...freudian perhaps?
you said Americans mindset is inferior, all I said is the empire is in decline, as is almost every industrialized nation, ie, the fall of Rome

I don't care what you want or ask for
so the OP's thread is pointless? you are not right in the head
you sound frustrated
