Well I’ve had the JHM short shifter installed for about 3 weeks now and have finally got the gear changes pretty much perfect, maybe even better than how the OEM shifter was set-up.
As I said before my gearbox didn’t seem to suffer with the problems getting 2nd gear on a cold gearbox that some other RS4s do, but after adjusting the JHM shifter about 3-4 times over a few weeks to get it spot-on I’m pretty sure that with a bit of patience and understanding of how to adjust the linkage onto the shifter I’m sure it’s possible to improve poor shifting boxes.
Here's how the OEM shifter looks, notice the grease on the 2 runners either side of the shifter, I have no idea why this is required as the runners are only there to get the shifter in the correct location ‘front to rear’ then once one of the adjusting bolt is tightened it never moves along those runners again.
Here is how the OEM shifter was set-up before being removed. Bolts A & B are the only two means of making adjustments to how easy gears can be selected. Bolt A is really only used to get the shifter in the correct vertical position. If you move the shifter housing towards the rear of the car, the gap in the slot indicated by arrow D gets larger. Arrow C is pointing to the end of the linkage arm which is just hidden from view under the silver coloured rectangular washer held in place by bolt B. This is the main means of adjusting the gear selections by sliding this connection fwds or backwards.
I also greased the shifter shaft where it slides up and down to go into reverse (spring removed in this pic), this wasn’t suggested in the instructions but it feels much slicker with a bit of loob!
JHM shifter installed, note no grease on the runners as isn’t necessary IMO. I went with the medium strength spring for reverse. The shifter comes with the soft spring pre-installed which is supposed to be the same as OEM but I found the gear knob would bounce up and down if I wrested my hand on it whilst driving.
Shifter adjusted so the bottom half is vertical and the top half is angled back towards the driver.
4 spacers are supplied for the B7 RS4 to raise the shifter housing by about 8mm, this appears to be a development part to give more clearance at the bottom end of the shifter.
This is the bolt positions for the final set-up. Notice gap A is similar to OEM but the silver rectangular washer is further forward than OEM revealing about 3-4mm of the end of the linkage arm (arrow B). I used the end of the linkage arm as the datum for adjustments and would make 1/2mm ish increments fwds or backwards from this point until I could get all gears easily, then test drive for a few days and adjust further if required. It takes a while but it’s worth it in the end! The whole gear lever now feels solid with no ‘waggle’ in the gear knob and gears can now be selected with a flick of the wrist
These are the tools I kept in the glove box for a few weeks so I could make adjustments when required
I recommend you watch the JHM videos at the bottom of this page a few times to get your head around installation and adjustments:
