he could have google/researched an answer if that is what he truely sought

all the times, weights, power, etc. are out there for anyone who desires the knowledge

imo knowledge was not his desire

..imagine - in the physical real world - we were all down the pub and someone you'd never met before came over and said how his £4k M3 was faster than your RS4, would you see that as slightly provocative?

Thats not what he said though, was it. He actually says the RS4 is quicker, albeit marginally. And it was his mate's car, not mine!

But to answer your question, if a fellow car enthusiast approached me down the pub to discuss the relative merits of his Beemer against my RS4, I would think I'd engage him in conversation.

If he had a Citroen Saxo, it might be a different matter, mind you ...

OK, so i own a £4k e36 m3 evo. Me and a friend who claims he is a member on here (might be along shortly) had a good blast last night in a variety of gears and pulls and the cars were neck and neck. His maybe a touch quicker in 4th gear +. He reckons his is healthy and verified 377 bhp on a dyno day with print out and recenty serviced. Am I as quick as he is slightly down on power? He says most dyno around this number. Not here for a medal just an explanation, he is probably a better driver than me to so theres that variable out the window. Expected more from a 400bhp+ car tho... and cant wor it out- he was joking that he might sell as my old tank kept with him :D
fella, the 36 was a superb motor correction still is....but it is like me in bed, runs out of steam to early....the 4 really comes into its own over a ton, that is when it would leave a lot of other performance motors... it is a stallion..

it's a set-up
1: his M3 is cheap, the RS4 expensive
2: his friend 'claims' he's a member? why would he lie?
3: neck and neck means equal
4: his maybe (sic) a touch quicker in 1 gear, otherwise equal
5: he states he is as quick, but the age old dyno/down on power BS is proferred as the 'reason'
6: can't be drivers, the RS4 driver is better, which implies since the cars are equal, and the other driver is better, his car must be more powerful to overcome the advantage...hmmmmm
7: he expected more: why?
it weighs 28% more and has 28% more power...wouldn't that imply 'equal'?
8: his 'friend' (who has yet to appear) may sell it now because his buddy taught him a lesson

sims?

just referenced some old files: AMS, Brooklands, etc., maybe 6 to 8 tests
(I've owned BMW's for 30 years, STILL own one, e46 M3)

avgs for 321 HP M3 vs (RS4)
0-60 5.7 sec (4.5)
0-100 14.5 sec (11 sec)
1/4 mile 14.2/99 (13/108)

avg in-gear times, at least 15% advantage RS4
700 lb wt difference

The stats are there and using the ones that Arthur quoted count 3.5 seconds. So tat is the difference to 100. In a car when you are beside someone in an RS4 and trying to keep up, 3.5 seconds seems to pass even quicker.

And that is always the issue with straight line drags. If the OP really wants to see what an RS4 can do, take it around a track and then you'll see the margin. Straightline drags are not an RS4's forte and I believe someone has said similar before, it is easy to drive fast in the dry in a straight line.

For example on the Nordschleife 8.35 for the E36, 7.58 for the RS4. Hockeheim short course 1.17.2 for E36, 1.15.4 for the RS4. Courtesy of fastestlaps.com

Give the guy a break. He probably watched Top Gear, or has heard a lot about how good the RS4 is. If people know I have an RS4, and they know what it is, that are "Wow, that's one mighty car". Maybe it's a case of the legend doesn't quite live up to the hype. Yes, it's a great car, maybe he was just shocked it wasn't quicker.

I'm not sure there was any ill-intent. Gee this place is agressive. Everyone wants to fight with everyone else (or anyone new or different).

Great car the M3, but isnt one of the reasons why you all bought an RS4 over a BMW is for the quattro system.....

Can the same run be done in the wet, plus add in a couple of roundabouts for good measure and I think the results would be mighty different.

Horses for courses i guess and both great in their own rights.
