They can corrode (setm and thread) but this is only an issue if you leave them exposed i.e. don't have the valve caps on or regulalry use acid based wheel cleaners and water near them. I had similar issues when I used Wonder Wheels et al but since I prepped my wheels and only have to use normal car shampoo to clean them they last lasted my last tyre change and 23k miles with me checking tyre pressures every week.

Why would i need new TPMS valves? I had owned a A4 with the TPM system before and replacing the valves never came up.
They corrode, the thread part breaks off when filling with air.
The batteries in the TPMS sensor don't last forever either, something live 5-7 years and then you need new TPMS sensors not just valves.

SportContact 3 Vs Pilot Sport 2 (Both RO1)

Post by RSLS » Sun Sep 05, 2010 7:51 pm

Currently running Michelin PS2s on my RS4, but have heard good things about the Continental SportContact 3. How do they compare?

Nnnooooooo! Don't do it. Stick with PS2 / 3's or if you have to change go to Goodyear F1's of Vredestein's.

I haven't tried PS2s, but don't rate the Contis. They were fine at first (same as on my S4) but lose turn-in early in life. Strangely it always seemed more pronounced at low speeds

How about trying Vredesteins?

I must admit that the Vredesteins have been on my list from the start, but the owner reviews and magazine / professional tests seem to be at odds with each other.

The SC3's were a liability in all conditions after 5k miles and only lasted 12k miles anyway. Goodyear F1's after that for me lasted 19k miles and have the edge over my current Vredesteins on road noise and ultimate dry grip. That said the Vredestein's are on a par in the wet than the F1's, an excellent snow tyre because of the tread whereas F1's and PS2's aren't, have lasted me 24k miles thus far with 3mm left and are cheaper.

I love my F1s, a really good tyre. but am willing to experiment too.
Money can't buy you love, but it can buy you a well sorted racecar

Just put 4 new Michelin Pilot Sport 3's on, replacing my previous PS2's after 17,000 miles. So far, the 3's feel even better than the 2's. Picked them up at Costco for £270 each. As a guide, National wanted about £340 per tyre.

That's £1080 for 4 tyres! I hope they are worth it. Is that just tyres or inclusive of fitting?

Isn't it just the way; Vredesteins a year and a bit ago were little known and now people are using them; they've gone up on average £40 per tyre! a 25% increase since I last bought them!

Fortunately there are a couple of places where you can still get them for £165 per corner; just hope ths is the case when I have to buy again as I've still got a couple of mm left before having to replace.
