MPG and Tyres

Well this had made my giggle quite considerably... as for driving like a tw@t everywhere i can pretty much say i'm lucky if i ever get over 20mpg on the C6.
These cars certainly are not to be bought for fuel economy in fact i wish i could turn all that crap off, even the Distance to empty is annoying.

I've since bought an MG ZT diesel for like £500 to drive around on parts collection journeys and random driving, mainly just to keep the miles off the RS, as we all know miles = big depreciation, but having used it as a daily for a year i really dont care about what it costs to keep it going, you cant own these cars on a budget at all!
Theres too many people who buy these and try to look after then on a dime and it doesnt work they get neglected and that equates to a lot of the terrible examples you find for sale third/fourth hand.
Buying the car is the easy part really, paying the fuel/tyres and brakes plus any other randoms is the expensive part!

Hmm interesting thread. Got me thinking, if I drive really slowly, say never over 3krpm, get the engine nice and full of carbon deposits, I could maybe get 35mpg........just like a 2.0l A4. Or how about getting it remapped to optimise fuel economy and put a limiter on, so you can't rev over say 4K?

ITS A 4.2l V8 RS4!!! FFS get it sold to someone who will thrash the arse off it. Like owning a racehorse and using it to keep the grass down in your garden.

Do you have it as a weekend car or every day car? I know what you're saying and i've had my fair share of 10mpg average but you can't seriously say you drive like a tw@t every time you get in the car?

Daily driver - in fairness I'm limited to how much I can thrash it here in Jersey, but the point is I NEVER once think about it. If I did it simply wouldn't be the right car for me. I bought it just over a year ago with 13K on the clock, and because it hadn't been driven spent the first 3 months sorting it out (<beep> in the tank, new pumps, fuel tank, the lot).

My view was when they engineered and built these cars they intended them for a purpose, and it would be downright disrespectful if not a crime to not use the cars as intended. I have put 10K on the car since (helped with frequent trips to Europe) and my avg MPH (having just checked this morning for the first time ever) is 14.4 - that's doing the school run.

Can I also point out that oil prices are near the lowest they've been for over a decade, but beginning to rebound (WTI hit $26 in Feb, but is back up to $39 now. Gasoline hit $90, now $142). I don't think we're seeing that at the pumps yet. Petrol prices are about as cheap as they're going to get IMO...enjoy it while it lasts!

Then there's the more general point that emissions regulations mean we're seeing fewer V8's. Manufacturers are looking at smaller capacity engines, with forced induction to make power. For example, looks like the B9 RS4 will be missing a couple of cylinders. The B7 RS4 is a breed that just isn't going to exist in future.

Fill 'er up with some 99RON and make the most of it!

Mine is a daily too but i don't people realise i don't aim to go out and get these figures, i don't think its clear, it just happened one journey and i was surprised, i was in no rush so just chilled. Having done plenty of miles in the car i enjoy it all the time whether it be fast or cruising and a lot of the time i don't see above 20mpg, maybe not driving like a tw@t to the extent of some people on here but there is going to be times where i have to go sensibly, if my little bro is in the car then i'm going to take it steady

This is an easy one for me;
For the tyre to be more economical it has to have less friction. This is the exact opposite quality i base my decision on which tyre to buy.
Do I pick a tyre that might save me 2mpg or do i pick a tyre that might save my life when I'm braking hard in the wet or going round a bend quick?
I want a tyre to give me as much grip as possible even if this means (and it generally does) less MPG and less miles before it wears out. Soft and sticky for me baby!

Flawless explanation, friction = grip and increased road noise, but an economical or harder compound tyre is the quickest way to ruining a good car, generally speaking we all buy these cars for pure driving pleasure and if you cut corners on spending to make the car cheaper to run perhaps it wasn't the right car in the first place....

More of a question from curiosity to see if there was a massive difference then for people to get abused about driving habits and costs.

When my commute is a 60 mile run on a motorway I guess I could get off and on at every junction and services to rag the hell out of it and make people think im great and keep my MPG down to fit in with the cool kids on here.

I drive the can for fun where I can but also use it as a........ well, a car.

Unless you're car costs over 40k. If I bought my car a year later it would have cost me an extra £1250 over 5 years.

My point was more that the manufacturers are being more and more heavily penalised for producing the higher emission engined cars, so cars like the B7 RS4 just won't be viable to put into production.

....not only do you have the audacity to start a thread in the RS246 B7 RS4 forum entitled "MPG and tyres" and then wonder why the general reaction has been WTF?! You then refer to the B7 RS4 as just "a car"....OMFG?! Where will this madness end...........will you next claim that Jesus or Mohammad were 'just men'? That we all got here by evolution not creation?! Or that the world isn't flat??................utter utter insanity.
