That amount of oil use is not right. If not cooler, and no leaks then its a major job. Drop it like a bomb!

i would imagine with that much consumption that they were well aware of the problem before selling it hence him fighting you back verbally to hope you,ll go away. don,t fiddle with it just get some legal advice and return the car to them. just out of interest what mileage? and rough price did you pay?? good luck with it and dont let them fob you off!!

18k 90000 miles. Drives like a dream too and only smokes when cold - you'd never have known. He's now saying he's off to Spain for a while!!!

Just FYI - There seems to be some fuel in the oil and when you put your hand where oil cap should go it sucks if it means anything.

Contact trading standards. Stop driving it and don't do anything with it. Make notes time and date of all your contact with them.
the law states that if you are claiming repair, replacement, full or partial refund within the first six months of ownership, the onus is on the trader to prove that the vehicle was sold without faults when you bought it. This is called the 'reversed burden of proof'. After six months, the burden of proof reverts back to you to provide evidence to support your claim that the vehicle was faulty when it was sold.

How did you pay for it by the way? credit card? debit card?

Given the dialog I would doubt the service ever took place so the oil might be trashed.

Just been told that the smoke is black and not white -- sounds crazy to me but he insists it is.

You'll need to upload the photo to an image hosting site like photobucket, and then put the link (the site address for the image ending with a .jpg) in between th eimg square brackets you get by clicking the Img button above this text input box. Ignoring the asterisks, it'll look something like -

2001 8L S3 - sold
2008 8P2 S3 - sold
2007 B7 RS4 - sold
2006 B7 RS4 (supercharged) - sold
2016 C7 RS6 - sold
2015 8V RS3 Stage 3 - sold
