They have a deliberate weak point ahead of the main weak part and the snapped lock will break here and prevent access to the mechanism. They have magnetic pins that need to be pulled down in addition to normal pins that get pushed so you can't simply bump the lock open.
When my new locks arrived I had a go at snapping and bumping just to see how it's done. My first go at snapping took all of 13 seconds.
Sounds like excellent advice to me...

As we heard a short while ago on 246 a guy lost his pride and joy at knife point, and another they waited till the house was empty, smashed straight through the patio windows and searched for the keys, locks still in place.

Perhaps the best way is (but hassle) remove an item from the car...... Years ago for those that can remember we use to remove the rotor arm.
By that logic you may as well leave the key in the ignition and the car unlocked...
Yes you can't stop everybody and a determined person will always manage to get in - it's about putting off the 99% of others who are looking for an easy ride.

a simple switch on the starter button or clutch pedal would do it.
Yes, another to add to my endless list, front discs and pads, Lambda sensor, oil pipes, vacuum system check, spare wheels ect ... Starting tomorrow !

Yes could do but quite like Adsgreen's idea of flicking a hidden switch,

Well no one will be considering nicking mine for a while, it in pieces, absolute nightmare getting 20mm wheel spacers off, having to drill all 5 x 14mm bolts out, why do people bolt things on cars with no lube or grease? God give me strength!

mine has an rfid tag relay on the starter. its nice as if it does screw up (which it hasn't) it wont stop the car when started and easy to pop out the switch and bypass.
can leave the card in the armrest when at dealer.
