Interesting. Mine's at MRC right now. Went in for a service and health check. Dyno came back with 340 bhp, with no other problems found.

If we assume the service is worth 10-15 bhp, that still leaves us with 59 bhp missing. I was "sold" £900 worth of carbon cleaning with the assurance that this would restore full power.

Guess we will find out soon.

mine went in for c/c running 370bhp and came back running 400bhp and would have been more if for an as yet unknown reason it was retarding the timing. should have made over 400 - probably the quoted 414 if not for the timing issue

there weren't any vacuum issues that were identified and the car definitely was a lot more responsive after the carbon clean..

that being said I did also switch fuel shortly after the c/c to see if the fuel i'd been using was the cause of the timing issue

I will pull my finger out and get the car back up to MRC and see what it does now. probably 300bhp just to confuse matters !

I use mine everyday, just put up with the fuel costs because i'm a petrolhead.

I decoked mine recently, no dyno though, only a subjective feeling that it revs a tad more sprighty.

That does seem to confirm the potential 30 bhp loss for carbon...

I know these engines have an inherent carbon issue, but on the more 'DIY' front what's the general consensus on giving it a good blast right up to the rev limiter a few times whilst out for a drive to help clear out some of the build up? Does that help at all? I thought the carbon build-up was mainly caused (and worsened) by driving the car like a fanny too much rather than using it properly.

I just struggle with the thought of paying a bucket-load for a carbon clean just to get to the power that should've been there all along, and is the difference pre/post clean and tune up really that noticeable on most of our cars that seem to run 370-380ish stock? I've never had mine dyno'd but on the road it does the job matching similar powered stuff (current M3's, etc) easy enough through the gears in typical driving situations where you stumble over some prey and you/they take chase (runways, etc. excluded). Surely to get a real noticeable difference you have to join the supercharger crew? Even though that's another step up in terms of investment...

to be fair I probably wouldnt have bothered with the carbon clean under normal circumstances however £800 or whatever it was to have it done was just a small part of a fairly large bill at MRC so while I was spanking my c/card I thought "what the hell" and got it done as well. man maths at its best :)

Bet Doug was chuffed as well.. :bigblink:
As dave says carbon in these motors account for no more Than 30 shergars...and also once you have had it cleaned within a couple of thousand miles a significant amount is present again, then the process slows....I think a lot of the feeling of once you have had a carbon clean is good old placebo effect..

probably very true but don't forget people get "cured" of illness by taking a placebo sometimes lol :)
