I have had a 535d and 335d touring, both chipped. The 335d did go well with very strong mid range BUT they were as dull as dish water com paired to my RS4 and would spin the wheels at 70 in the wet when you kicked down.

I know which one I would prefer any day :-)

P.S My 1988 Defender with a tuned 300tdi engine does occasionally shock the odd small car or Van at the lights :-)

An Audi TT (11 plate) with a TFSI badge on the back. Embarrassing.

I was on my way back from a stationery run to Staples near the Metro Centre in Gateshead. Basically a twelve mile blast for some paper - procrastination at it's finest  . The car was all nicely warmed up for the trip home. I pulled up behind a very shiny looking TT on the boring exit routes from the Metro Centre area. He sharpened up his driving when he saw what was behind and I had no doubt he wanted to show off his toy. A minute later we were both indicating to pull into a very long, empty dual lane slip road to head north onto the A1. We both pulled onto it at about 10mph. We both floored it. Or I assume we did: I couldn't hear his 4 pot and there was no perceptible sinking of the rear; just clean, linear acceleration. I was in the 'overtaking' lane but starting from about 20 meters behind. The little TT was harder to catch up than I anticipated!! I very quickly regretted not slipping down a gear.

Much head scratching and google searching was done that night. It was probably a 2.0 TFSI - 208bhp, 1260kg, a 6.0 0-60 and (I'm hoping) dual clutch.

Post match analysis suggests that my initial low revs + poor gear choice/changing levelled the playing field for his torquey turbo, lower weight and dual clutch. He ran out of puff while my V8 got into full swing. By the time he reached the motorway I was like a speck of dirt on his wind screen. It was a very very long slip road - one of the best roads around here to do that sort of thing yet not draw any attention. You just have to remember to slow down for the motorway

Never underestimate your adversary! :P

Just remembered another one

1960's vw beetle blowing past a Holden HSV (VXR8)

VW had a rotary engine in it. No way of knowing from behind!

I got handed my ar$e last year in Italy by the latest shape Focus RS. :boohoo:

An old yellow Volvo 850 saloon, but then when it past me I noticed the R badge on it, black R alloys, body kit and big exhaust which indicated it may well have been fettled with.

this Honda Civic pulled up beside me at the dragstrip one day. When I saw the parachute on the back, and the massive front tires...I got concerned.

as we both staged and he got his revs up and engaged his launch control, the sound was absolutely deafening and terrifying. So when the lights turned green, I let him go ahead of me because I didn't want to be beside him in case he got all squirrely and wiped me out. Your '1/4 mile elapsed time' doesn't start till you go irrespective of the lights, so I often do this when I'm opposite a monster drag car at the test and tune/run what ya brung days.

Turns out my concerns about ever being 'beside' him were unwarranted lol. Here he is another time at the same track. I should go find my timeslip...it was my first time at the strip in my old B7 S4...I arrived thinking I had a quick car :D.

Pretty wild. The trap speeds were scary. On one run I was a couple of spots in front of that guy, and at the end of the track, after getting my slip (they give us our slips from a kid in a hut at the end of the track) I was just heading back along the return lane, and he went by full bore trapping around 160 mph. It was pretty insane how violent 160 mph is when you're just tootling along at 10 mph.

The track I go to they have a fairly big racing series that's based there, so if you go on a Friday night before a Sunday race, there are all kinds of 5-6-7=8 second cars out there. They're ridiculous. Not my cup of tea...frankly I like seeing the street cars more than anything just cuz it's fun to see what cars do what etc. and I personally just love cars so watching them rip full bore is fun. The dragstrip is a nice test in my eyes...and it's fun...but for some of these guys it's their life. That Civic must have a good nickel in it. Just the safety equipment alone would be insane - mandatory roll cage, fire extinguishing system (not a fire extinguisher...an automatic system!), parachute etc. Pretty wild. I don't see the point personally. It's fun, but you're starting to get into 'I may die doing this' speeds, thus that's where I say 'no thanks!'
