I don't have a cd changer though.... (ipod adapter instead) - I might go hunt an A4 forum as there are millions of them on the road and I bet Audi use the same aircon - back in 2!

Right guys - think I've solved this - I am truly awesome...?! :jump_clap:

http://www.audiforum.ca/showthread.php?t=62168

If, like me you can't be bothered to read it, it looks like the climate control unit - 1 of 6 motors being stroppy. I loved one of the comments on there from 'Vliou'
It's German, it's got a personality.
I told you - it's a 'click gremlin' - you'll all want one soon.

Anyway, change all 6 motors and it goes away apparently
"The noises are coming from HVAC flap actuator motors. There is a product update for those motors. The motors generally will function but they making that clicking noise."
So, I think I'll have to live with the gremlin as my wife has started a 'save the click gremlin' campaign the frigging bint.

And you need a mortgage to do it - the motors are nearly £100 EACH.

Use the output test facility of VAG-COM to work out which motor(s) is/are clicking. Then remove the motor(s) (3 bolts only) so you can check the linkage is free and lubricate it before re-assembly. You might be able to fix the clicking for the cost of a couple of hours of your time rather than nearly £600.

Mine had clicked from new, but since I took it apart a few weeks ago it's worked silently since so I suspect the linkage had been built "tight" from new.

 I think I will be getting used to the clicking noise in that case.

You don't have to put up with it - just use VAG-COM as I suggested and you can probably fix it yourself for the cost of a tin of WD40.
