Michael, I was in a very similar position to you. As Petrol Dave nicely puts it there are a few of us the wrong side of 50 (only just though, and it doen't stop you being a petrolhead). I also am a long time owner of a 993 which I shall never sell (unless for another one) - it is just too good a car, has been a long term daily driver, great build quality, never let me down, no modern driving gizmos - a more pure driving experience!
But I needed something else (give the old girl a bit of a rest and enable me to treat her to some 'extras' at a subtle pace) that would give some practicality as well as being a little different. Have done the BMW thing before. I decided it needed to be an estate or 4x4. Had a RRS for a while which I actually thought quite good but that went and the search was on again. The RS4 (and RS6) had come into my thinking previously and I realised that actually it would be absolutely perfect (performance, estate and 4x4). Did a lot of research and checking around, especially on this site and gleaned lots of information and knowledge. Looked at both RS4(B7) and RS6Plus(C6) at Audi dealer - both great cars but the RS4 won it on dynamics, looks, interior and surprisingly the wife actually liked the bucket seats and FBSW! The deal was done and have never regretted it - such a fantastic allround performer with a 'under the radar' subtle (yet agressive) style and practicality (not many others if any can make that claim).
It is a modern car and so I do enjoy the modern comforts/electronics in it - as against the 993 which is the antithesis of this. Forgetting for a moment the 'problems' that us enthusiasts report (engine coking and DRC etc - none of which affected me, so far) I would echo the wording of JC that it is one of the greatest engines and best Audis ever (yes, even JC admitted this).
If you can find a good one you will not find the running costs so different to the 993 (which I would presume you maintain via a specialist) - you cant drive both at the same time anyway (lol)! What you will enjoy very much is perhaps using the RS4 as a daily (IMHO - oustanding) and then giving the 993 a weekend run - the comparison is weird but wonderful. Both of them keep me smiling (and feeling younger than the 50+ club memebership dictates).
The only thing I would say is that they can be a target for scummy tea leaves. My RS4 was stolen a couple of months back - just waiting to get it back from Audi (should be better than new when its back) and can't wait. Never ever had this problem with the 993 though (even when it was much newer and desirable). My final words - RS4 + 993 = as reasonably perfect as you could want. Just do it!
Cheers
Chris
