So this engine will just slowly coke itself up to the point where performance is affected, guaranteed? Its just a matter of time! Is this a design floor?

Good question. Its not just direct injection thats the problem. Its direct injected engines that volatize (consume) high quantities of oil. If other direct injected engines are volatizing small amounts of oil, there is much less oil in the crankcase air stream and much less oil that can be deposited on the valves. The RS4 engine consumes a large amount of oil - a liter in 2000-6000 miles is typical. I don't think the oil consumption is a big surprise to Audi, but maybe the intake deposit problem is.

Since all petrol engines are going to be direct injection in a few years (to cut emissions) - the latest Porsche engines are direct injection - then we're stuffed!

What we need is some kind of cleaner that we can spray into the area between the air cleaner and the valves...

I don't for a second think that Audi don't know about the issue.

Its only because we're enthusiasts that owners are opening up their manifold and having a look in there anyway...when else would the average owner ever expect to see the inside of their manifold?

I'm staggered at that kind of build up though after that mileage.

What about an (m)ethanol spray down the intake?

(Disclaimer: I know nothing about (m)ethanol!)

I'm having a bit of work done with MRC so they will be investigating & sorting if necessary while they have the car.

In talking this problem through with them, a menthanol injector into the manifold is a possible option but a pretty expensive one.

The plan is to monitor buildup over 3000-4000 miles then make a judgement from there.

I think the simple fix would be for Audi to inform all the dealers that intake valve buildup will be possible in any FSI they sell, particularily the 4.2FSI. Each vehicle should be allowed one valve inspection at the minimum, clean them if necessary and plan on regular cleaning afterward (its a dream, I know). If the buildup was controlled in this fashion, there would probably be much fewer engine problems for everybody. Also, once the dealers are aware of this, they can DISPENSE WITH the typical BS that makes the buildup somehow associated with the owner, such as "How do you drive the car?", or "Do you go for short trips?". Those variables are insignificant when you consider how bad the build-up is regardless of how the car is driven.

Additives

Post by caldy » Thu Mar 05, 2009 8:25 pm

Have a read of the following response from an enquiry to Wynn Products.
I've never been a fan of additives but perhaps these are worth a try.

Dear Sir,

We developed some years ago a dual product for Direct petrol injection engines

a) A fuel additive to clean the injectors, and have a keep cleaning action on the inlet by product returned to the inlet by mean of the EGR system.

b) A spray to clean the air intake system, inlet valves, EGR valve. This needs to be sprayed in the inlet, with running engine (see attached technical data sheet)

I think in your case certainly product (b) is very advisable. For a Total and perfect cleaning it can be used together with (a).

Mitsubishi for example is executing the dual treatment in Belgium at each 15 000 km service interval.

We would appreciate your feedback on our technical assistance. Please reply to this e-mail with the table filled out :
