I think this net shell is now pretty cracked now. As we all know, part of the PDI early on was to change all the plugs as the car ran VERY rich when cold. A lot of people noticed smoke and fowled plugs. When I took delivery of my car, I was even warned not to start stop quickly as this could cause the plugs to be fowl. So Audi bring out 0080, which stop the car from being so rich and running high idle for so long. Now if you are a numpty dumpty that never lets your car warm up due to mega short journeys ... guess what might happen .... plugs my dear all ... Hence 0090 Topic close

Hi,

I have got one of the last RS4 from production (received last year).

The model seems to be quiet different:

before the update: (was version 0030)

Adresse 01: Moteur Labels: 079-910-560-BNS1.lbl
No. pièce Log:: 8E1 910 560 D Mat:: 8E1 907 560
Pièce: 4.2L V8/4V FSI ª0030
Révision: 57H15--- No. de série: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Codage: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

After the update: the last known from Audi (0050)

Adresse 01: Moteur Labels: 079-910-560-BNS1.lbl
No. pièce Log:: 8E1 910 560 D Mat:: 8E1 907 560
Pièce: 4.2L V8/4V FSI ª0050
Révision: 57H15--- No. de série: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Codage: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

I didn't noticed some major changes...it seems that I have no more issues to start on the morning when the weather is cold.... Engine is a bit more reactive.

But is this in benefit of the dealer or the owner?

Like a W8 said, would be good to see/hear what this does to the car and how it runs.
Never argue with an idiot, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I got my car back today after taking it in for a brake fluid change and a few small warranty items. While in there I asked them to investigate the dark smoke/soot I sometimes get for the first few seconds of running when cold in the morning.

Although it was already running sw0080 when it went in they have downloaded sw0090 while to help cure (though I had to confirm myself with the help of vag-com  ) I've only done a few miles since but it definitely has a higher tick-over when first started and it seems to have a slightly better kick around the 5,500 mark. I will report back over the next few days on.

As to the "sw0090 is only applied to cars that show problems with cold start running":

Mine received 0090 when it was with Audi's Tech Service Centre at Milton Keynes having the DRC done (having failed at the local dealer many times). I did not report any problems with cold running, but they installed it anyway. To be 100% accurate, i DID ask "were there any updates the car needed?" but absolutely did not refer to any running problems.

In terms of difference:
(a) I DO observe less smoke on start-up (which i had put down more to oil being burnt than richness - but it was apparently a bit of both),
(b) I would say the first few miles of cold running are smoother (used to be the odd hesitation which i put down to high state of tune)
(c) There is a very definite fast idle now (like a car with an auto choke would have) for the first 90 secs when cold
(d) No material difference in driveability.

And, boy, does the fast idle sound good with the exhaust valves fixed open.

They wouldn't give me 0090 today as "its only for cars with cold start issues".

I asked for it anyway.

Wouldn't budge.

As usual the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.

Still I've never had any cold start issues.

Still get occasional smoke from the right bank (predominantly) on start-up after its been left a while. Unpredictable though.

Lastly but not leastly, the AMG C63 saloon I came across on the way home did not want to play.

P***y.

Did sound great though.

Yep - I think I know the guy (through a friend of a friend :? )

On the sw0090 matter - a day into having it installed on the car I agree with all of rjkflyer's points above. The car defiantly seemed to run/feel better for the length of the journey into work this morning - even though I’ve never felt like it had a problem before! The only reason I got the update was because I mentioned it seems to be running very rich on cold start (using sw0080)

There was far too much traffic on the roads to give the car a push and evaluate the top end but I will hopefully get a chance tonight

I've had an ECU upgrade today, but not sure what they've done. My car was missing on cylinders for a few seconds from cold, and was then lumpy for the first couple or so miles. When I picked it up from the garage and started it, it 'ticked over' at about 1300rpm for what seemed like an age, infact I set off driving as I wondered if it would lower as it warmed up. It did.

However, I've now got a car, which appears to have lost it's urgency to take off and go when you put your foot down, the mid range torque has gone, and, well I've lost that 3rd and 4th gear magic :(

I rang the garage when I got back to the office and told them, and they told me to book it straight back in so they could fix it.

Anyone any idea's what's going on? I've read on another forum something about a 'reset' but can't find it now.

Basically I want my old engine back, as I'm happy to put up with the rough running from cold, if the alternative is an engine down on power.

Cheers

I got my car back from its first routine service and there is an item on the invoice

Carried out recall 24H8 - ECU Update

Does anyone recognise this? Is it 0080 or 0090 or nothing to do with the software refresh?

I had the 0090 update last week

The throttle response is significantly better at mid-range (like an additional Sport button) but I haven't had the chance to really put my foot down

Maybe the upgrade was done without clearing the existing driver settings - I've read that this makes it look like a backwards step...

IIRC 24H8 is 0080.

0090 is optional, on demand only.

No its not - im not sure what that number relates to. I think the only way to find the ECU version is through a VAG-com.

One thing that's happened with mine since I got 0900 a few weeks ago, is that the check engine light has come on a few times when I've first started. It's as if the system can't cope with the high revs when the engine's cold, if it misses slightly. Turning off and restarting has cleared the problem each time, but I guess I should have it looked at. Anyone else had this?
