Saloon for me, but if the RS5 was out I would have gone for that as I don't need a big car, as the 2nd car in family deals with any load lugging jobs
The Avant is the only Audi RS :blackrs4:
Yeah if your a funeral director.
Most Avant drivers will be 45 plus, fat, bald have ugly wives and get out of breath when they get up for a slash.
Saloon drivers are getting that way they just havnt quite given up on life yet.
cab drivers just wish they had a proper RS. :D
How dare you, my wife is beautiful.

I was more interested in how the cars hold their value, how a car looks and personal preferences are subjective, personally prefer the look of the Avant but it's each to their own. I've been surprised when people have said that the saloon holds its' value better, I just wondered if they're a bit deluded. On the subject of performance, I sure that the Avant is heavier, so in what way does it outperform the saloon?

Seriously performance difference is going to be next to nothing. Have a look on pistonheads classifieds, Autotrader and Audi used car locator and you will see that they are all pretty much the same. Most 2006 cars are up for 40-43k (depending on spec and miles) most 2007 cars are up for 42-46k. Dealer cars seem to be slightly more and there is even an avant white edition where a dealer has put it up for 68k
Either car at the moment seem to be holding their values and I would even suggest that the prices look slightly higher than they did 6 months ago but thats not to say they are selling. My local dealer tells me that demand for saloons is high (I didnt ask about avants) and that they always shift them. So it looks as good as it can for a gas guzzling 4 door car with the carbon foot print the size of Great Britain.

I will try to answer with out all the silly BS above

the avant is 50kg heavier (approx if I remember correctly) and that extra weight is all up high, ie in the wrong place

so the saloon will be faster and handle better, but no way am I a good enugh driver to tell the difference as it would be so small

the avant was the original RS style so if you are big on tradition and smoke a pipe this may be important for you, wasn;t for me

looks are subjective so not much point commenting - but I will! the B7 is the first RS where the saloon is as nice to look at as the avant IMHO

image wise the avant has a bit more of a whiff of 40+ bloke with dog than the 30+ single or no kids bloke saloon

I have 1 kid, just getting rid of wife and no dog - I like my cars to be as small as possible for my needs rather than the other way round so saloon fine for me and RS5 better if it had been around

value wise I would say avant may be worth £500 more but cost £1k more to start with - so colour/mileage/spec more important, I suspect my low miles high spec black saloon will be worth just as much as an avant

If you look at Glass's guide you will see that saloons hang on to their value better than an Avant, fact.

Only just saw the update on this thread as I have been smoking my pipe constantly for the last few hours.

PS I would argue that a 'lifestyle estate' such as the RS4 is maybe a younger car than the saloon as the saloon looks more 'corporate' and the Avant is more sporty - ie to carry MTBs, windsurfers etc...

What I've always said too. I've had a T-Sport quattro, S4 and RS4 - all avants, and all for looks rather than practicality. Problem is, it's full of smoke, and I can't see out of the back for all the slippers...
