Water at 10 degrees Celsius hitting a turbo at nearly 1000 degrees Celsius will cause a pretty enormous thermal shock to the metal. Have that happening a few times and the turbo will most likely fracture.
Gone: 2006 B7 RS4 Avant (Phantom Black)

Why then do some manufacturers build their cars with the turbos behind the rear wheels?PetrolDave wrote:Water at 10 degrees Celsius hitting a turbo at nearly 1000 degrees Celsius will cause a pretty enormous thermal shock to the metal. Porsche have their turbos in exactly the same place as that M5.

Because they enclose them in heat shields - they don't leave them exposed underneath the car.t_urbo wrote:Why then do some manufacturers build their cars with the turbos behind the rear wheels?

The new 997 turbo has got heat sheilds but they are to stop the bumper melting!PetrolDave wrote:Because they enclose them in heat shields - they don't leave them exposed underneath the car.t_urbo wrote:Why then do some manufacturers build their cars with the turbos behind the rear wheels?

Correct me if im wrong but i dont see any heat shields protecting the turbos, headers or exhaust from water.

Thermal shock is caused by rapid temperature changes over a period of time. I.e. 10C temp change every 10 minutes. So water at an ambient temp of 10C will not cause cracking of the turbo. Thermal shock is also more common with brittle materials. As turbo_d stated exhaust, brakes do not suffer from themal shock and they are exposed to water. Thermal shock is a cause for concern when it is a rapid temperature change over a period of time.PetrolDave wrote:Water at 10 degrees Celsius hitting a turbo at nearly 1000 degrees Celsius will cause a pretty enormous thermal shock to the metal. That 997 TT underside looks VERY exposed to crap flying up (e.g. stones etc) from the rear tyres. Still, I'd imagine porsche know what they're doing.

Well I dont know a lot about Porsche turbos only that I had a dog called Portia once and that a blue 911 tried and failed to follow me round a few roundabouts the other day!!
BUT anyone know if this can be done to the B7 RS4 for sensible money? If so YES PLEASE!!!!

Do you mean the rs4 goes sideways by that comment? I have a rs6 and had it just over a week and bored already. Im used to big power rear wheel drives but the rs6 is a bit boring. Would love to be able to step the back end out. Think i need a rs4 if you can with them! And i have the amd re map etc, Dino on the rs6 is 520 bhp and 513 torgue. Still boring!mattysupra wrote:audijohn wrote:Why would you need extra power like that, we can't use what the car has now without looking over our shoulders.

I've no idea where you drive, but around here red lining in anything but first second and occasional 3rd your licence will disappear quicker than your 0-60 time.mattysupra wrote:mattysupra wrote:Do you mean the rs4 goes sideways by that comment?
