I thought I was a bit crazy with the smell. Thought it was old fish somewhere!

I did this tonight - the old liquid was dark brown (car's on 69k and no idea if it's ever been changed), but it was outdoors so I didn't get much of a smell off it...

Went into Trade Parts Specialists in Reading (they appear to be the parts supplier that all the VAG dealers use to source parts, as the main dealers can look up stock on TPS systems), and picked up 2x 1L bottles of G004000M2 for £16, which I thought was pretty good. Couple of quid for that syringe on ebay and half an hour later, and it's job done.

Took the car out for a quick spin and I can't say I'm floored by the difference - but then, I don't think there was anything much wrong with the RS4's steering ;-) Anyway, it hasn't done any harm.

One thing it hasn't done is make much/any difference to the shrieking from the power steering pump on full lock. I did ask a specialist about that once, and got the TADTS answer...

I just bought 2L, I'm liking the method, I didn't realise the fluid circulated so quickly.
My steering feels fine at the mo so not expecting much or any difference but the fluid is definitely pretty manky looking! Worth £20 for the peace of mind.

Finally got round to having a go at this today

The first syringe full was black sludge, and it took 2 ltrs to flush and top up

Slight improvement on the steering feel but now no screeching on full lock - result

Good write up and very helpful, I did find by using a empty volvic square 50cl water bottle for the used fluid, it's fits snug in between the steering resevior and the washer header, saves taking the dirty fluid in the syringe over the bodywork

Nice cheap worthwhile bit of maintenance

Bought primarily for oil changes through the dipstick, thought I'd try it out on this. Winner! :) works real well and shapped to fit between your thighs. No mess.
