Hi Iain,
Thanks for reply. I replaced the lower switch which is for the ignition i believe. However the poor starting still persists. I can sit there pressing and releasing the push button for up to 5 minutes before the car starts or I give up. I do not really want to keep replacing parts at extra cost. If I knew what was the problem for definite I would get it replaced.

Needs a new STARTER MOTOR
Forget batteries forget clutch switches forget starter relays... Trust in me
Had exactly the same issue... New motor fitted and bang it fired up first time so save yourself the headache of trying anything else just change the motor mate.

There have been several threads on audizine on exactly this subject, it's the starter motor.

Re: Col starting
To update from the earlier post I made. I was at TPS yesterday for other parts and asked them to check the part numbers of the clutch switches. The ones they previously supplied above are correct and there are notes on the system that they are updated parts from the original.Iain_S4 wrote:Old Parts - removed
Upper - 8E0 927 189B
Lower - ?J0 927 189F (suspect first character missing/rubbed off?)
Replacement Parts - From TPS checked against chassis number
Upper - 7H0 927 189
Lower - 6Q0 927 189
It maybe doesn't change anything regarding the comments about the starter above.
Re: Col starting
I'm with B7RSX on this one.
Irrespective of the make of car, with the systems you describe, definately the starter motor. Going back to my early days of 'tinkering' in the 70's, these symptoms back then pointed to the starter motor assuming the battery was good. Today, even with all the electrical wizardry, I'm still with the starter motor being the culprit. Not in the same league, I know, but I've just had the exact same problems you describe with a V6 Vauxhall Omega 3.2 - a new starter motor cured that too!
Starter motor, starter motor, starter motor........

Re: Col starting
Does anyone have a guide to replacing the starter motor or has had it done recently and can advise cost of the labour?
I got a price for the motor from TPS but when I had a look to see what is involved to fit it, thought it was maybe best left to the experts. Adding weight to this view is that I have just booked my car in for MOT with a local VW/Audi specialist and they are reluctant to quote a price for the work.
