Thanks all - that's really good advice/knowledge you've given, it really puts me in a much clearer position.

I suppose it's a bit catch 22. It's essential to get a FASH, but in order to get that you have to accept the car has been strict on the servicing guidelines. the ideal scenario is to get a car that the history is known from day 1 by the owner who still changed teh oil etc (but that really is asking too much!) I think there's at least £1000 haggling to be done, possibly as much as £2000 if the discs/tyres etc will need changing. I'll email him tonight and let him know my position before traveling to see it. So that I don't waste his time, or mine going to see a car he won't sell at a price. :)

yes it needs to be put in for service as soon as you buy it, and thats a plug change service ... waiting till June 2013 is bollux

£1k off for that is high ... you'll prob pay c. £700.

and, this is a positive, as you then have a freshly serviced and checked over car.

yep both my C6 RS 6 and V10 R8, i had to put in for service immediately after buying them

but i like that

means you are starting from a fresh slate ... fresh oil, filter etc and fully checked over from Audi

peace of mind

No you don't, there's no catch 22. If I took the car in for an oil change or service before it was due the dealer would rub his hands and I doubt would even question it. More importantly this doesn't mean you are breaking the terms of the FASH, all it means is that your car has been looked after better than the Audi (mnimum) recommendations. There's nothing to sa you can't do it sooner. The dealer probably thought he was doing that guy a favour by turning him away saying the service is not due and you have question why the guy accepted that a an answer.

Anyway, good luck!

I sent the email last night outlining concerns re the immediate future costs. And his reply is now in...!
seller wrote:I understand your concerns about costs / issues which is why I bought direct from Audi and, after their warranty expired, had the Warranty Direct warranty (which included wear and tear by the way as opposed to Audi's which was more restrictive).

Thus I dont think your budget of £1k for the next 12 months is unreasonable though personally I'd have the disks changed (when they're due) by an independent rather than by Audi. The service indicator in the car last night told me 211 days / 8+k miles until the next service though i am doing less miles now.

However, I'm afraid I cant sell for £xxk though (I had an offer from a dealer at the same amount). I can however go down to £xxk (£1.5k off the asking price and £1k more than you've offered).
What do we think?

If you can afford the amount he is suggesting I'd go take a lot at it in the flesh. How far do you have to travel?

I think the fact he knocked off £1.5k without even as much of a fight (that was the first time we spoke about cost) indicates there may be a smidgen more to go, but yes this car is now close to my desired price range I set out with.

The car is about 20 mins away so a trip around the M25 will see me there in no time.

How does his statement re the service clock stack up?

Lol I thought it must have been the other side of the country too! I'd have looked first then discussed the merits later. Having said that once you get there and drive it you won't be leaving without it.

Agreed - 20 minutes?! you must have spent more time sending the seller emails than it would have taken to get there and have a good ol' fashioned haggle!

The service indicator will say what it says, but it's only a guide - you can ignore it and change the oil every week if you feel like it, or go fixed interval

I would discard his comments about p/x as a dealer knows these are in demand still if decent, the one whos p/x price you recently questioned has gone already and dealers will work on smaller margins if its a dead cert. They all work differently anyway, some price in alot of fat others price low and dont budge, the actual car is whats important given there age now and the hands there dropping into.
