bleed the brakes/clutch, fit fuel filter and map it. i will download a "safe" map at first in which all the sensors sensitivity is turned up to check for issues, i drive on this for a couple of days then give jhm all the data. after they check everything over then i download the full fat map!.RIV wrote:What's next? Sounds interesting, what's the expected power increase, sorry!! Re: JHM stage 1 supercharger kit
as you know jhm dont quote dyno numbers all they say is for stage 1 expect 80 - 100 WHP over current configuration or mid to late 11 second 1/4 mile trapping 117-119 mph.RIV wrote:Sounds interesting, what's the expected power increase, sorry!! If only there was some kinda repeatable way to test a cars performance in a straight line over a short distance...

Re: JHM stage 1 supercharger kit
right.....
happy with the clearance of the charger and all the brackets bolted up i decided to tackle the relocation of the a/c dryer and the new a/c lines.
this was one of the biggest sticking points of getting jhm to sell me a kit, there are a few differences between a r/h/d rs4 and a l/h/d rs4 a/c set up and with them not having a r/h/d car to mock it up on it was a challenge. i agreed and excepted that there might need to be a few tweaks to the lines to get the final fit right, jhm sent me spare crimp on ends ect for the lines so i could adjust as needed.
here is a ruff pic of the differences between a r/h/d and l/h/d standard ac set up on a l/h/d usa car the connections for the ac lines are in the bulkhead right behind the oem air filter box, on a r/h/d uk car they are at the opposite side of the bulk head. the blue ac line in the pic has to be changed, it has to have a threaded connector welded on to take the modified rubber ac line for relocating the ac dryer filter (jhm do the welding, you either send in your ac lines for modification ahead of time or you pay a core charge and they supply the new lines and you send back your old oem ones after for a refund).
here is the proposed route/relocation for a l/h/d usa car. you are basically re homing the ac dryer filter (because thats the superchargers new home) to behind the (our) drivers front wing.
unfortunately this is not possible on a r/h/d uk car as this is where the charcoal filter for the fuel evap system lives, so the proposed relocation for a r/h/d uk car is behind the opposite side wing.
on a l/h/d usa car both ac lines have threaded connectors on them just behind the oem airbox which makes the job a piece of cake. on a r/h/d uk car one line has a connector but the other one (blue one in the bulkhead in first pic) is solid so must be undone from the opposite side, this is a bit more work as you have to remove both ecu's and mounting hardware unplug a few pipes and remove the master cylinder and servo as the pipe runs underneath everything in that section
.
it might have been possible just to remove the master cylinder and leave the servo in place to remove the pipe but i didnt want to have to rag on anything so i stripped it all out. i really wish i had tried to leave the servo in place as trying to get the ball on the end of the rod out the back of the servo where it clips into the pedal assembly was a right ball ache, i had the proper audi tool to unclip it but it just wouldnt budge. had to smash it out in the end (not easy) and to top it off the nylon clip which the rod clips into which you can buy separate for nearly every other audi comes as one part of the pedal assembly on a rs4, so instead of £4 for a new clip it was £29 for a piece of metal box section and a clip
stripping out the ecus, servo ect. my wiper arms were seized solid i had to remove them still attached to the mechanism and give them three days of penetrating fluid before i could persuade them off!. with that stripped we could run the new ac lines, the smaller red line fitted no probs but the larger blue lines thread was cocked off at the wrong angle so needed a bit of a tweak.
she's not gona go captain! it was also tight with the air filter. on a l/h/d usa car the blue ac pipe loops round the other side of the air filter because it has to head back over to behind the wing where they relocate the dryer filter, on a r/h/d uk car the pipe has to head off in the opposite direction so you cant have this loop. having the loop also allows the air filter to sit lower touching the red pipe. so i modified it as follows, those with an angle grinder phobia look away now!
once cut off and attached to the rubber pipe i reworked and marked up the new angle, then had the pipe ali welded up.
i crossed the pipes over as this gave the best fit overall fit and allowed the pipes to pass through the hole in the inner wing. this also gave the air filter enough room to fit nice.

Re: JHM stage 1 supercharger kit
Bloody hell this is getting scarry and less of a DIY install.
Will JHM make a new kit for the RHD cars or will this have to be a custom job for the UK?

Don't get me wrong I don't think its a hard install really, its made more complex by the environment your working in.
I belive I am the first person to do a "home" install on this kit, up until now I think only jhm and a couple of shops in the USA have installed it.
I am reporting the couple of alterations to the ac lines back to jhm, so I can't see why the next set of r/h/d aclines won't be bang on.
Remember this kit hasn't officially launched in the USA yet never mind the uk, so there is plenty of time for them to do any last tweaks.

Re: JHM stage 1 supercharger kit
I know what you mean but still think this is about what would be expected with squeezing a US kit onto a UK car and to my mind was never going to be a go into the garage on Friday night and drive your charged car to work on Monday.
I think the people who will buy this kit will either go for a professional install or have the experience/knowledge to get pipes made up although I am sure JHM would appreciate a copy of the pipe so they can offer a more ready to go RHD kit - I still think this is all pretty much as good as could have hoped for with such a complex conversion.
