Starter Motor replacement costs.

Post by mcox42 » Mon Mar 26, 2018 8:18 am

Hi,

Has anybody replaced the starter motor recently? What sort of costs am I looking at?

Had to bump start the beast on Friday to get her started. AA man suggested that as the car was 11 years old there was probably dead spots/dirt on the motor/brushes. I had already replaced the clutch switches in the morning. After the bump start it has fired up perfectly every time since, but want to get a new starter sorted asap. Having just spent £3k on bits over the last couple of weeks I don't really want to be blowing another few £k on replacing the starter at this week.

Cheers

Martin

P.S. Can not recommend BCS (Brake Calliper Specialists - Nottingham) enough. Had all my nipples helicoiled... , plus a calliper clean and performance test all for £210. Clean bill of health (and peace of mind) for the callipers all done in 3 days. Very professional service and a much cheaper option than the new replacement cost of £2.7k (parts only) form a local stealer.

That's not as bad as I thought then. Thanks for getting back to me.

I think a new starter from TPS is around the £200 to £225 mark once you’ve given them your old one plus give or take 3 hours labour to do it. Done my own quite recently but took a bit longer as I did it on my drive. Not sure how necessary it is but the six engine mount bolts and four ARB clamp nuts are use once so should be changed. I didn’t chnage mine and I’m sure most garages wouldn’t and my engine hasn’t fell out, but my starter has got to come off again and I’ve got all new ones for when I do it again, not particularly cheap for nuts and bolts but hey!

I changed my engine mount at the same time as that occasionally showed up an error and it makes it easier to change starter motor with that engine mount out.

I replaced all bolts at the same time, didn't think they came to much, maybe a few quid.
