Occasional cloud of oil smoke on idle, mainly* on cold startup

Post by Rodney007 » Sat Sep 09, 2017 3:09 am

Hi guys,

Have noticed a few times on cold startup a puff of smoke causing a small cloud coming from the exhaust that lasts 3-4 seconds then goes. From
what I have read this is quite common and not to be worried about.

However I have noticed on several occasions the smoke coming 5 minutes after startup on idle.

Car runs very well and doesn't do this when warm. Even on WOT there is little to no smoke.

Is this something that can be caused by the PCV system or a faulty part? its kind of embarrassing and not the most ideal thing to be happening even though
I know my engine is in good health.

Cheers,

If I started mine from cold then stopped it before revs had dropped back to normal idle and left car for a while. The next start up would smoke for a minute and pulling away would give quite a bit of smoke.
All other times it was fine with no smoke whatsoever.
Addressing another issue a new inlet manifold was fitted - since then no smoke even after a short start stop like it used to do so my thoughts were the smoke was related to the inlet manifold somehow.

PCV Valve will cause this issue and are known to fail so I would change that first for sure. You can pick them up for around £120 and it live behind and below the oil filter but is a pig to change.

I used to have quite a lot of smoke on cold start up and it could last upto a few minutes.

Did a compression test and everything is fine, which rules out piston ring sealing issues. Recently, I changed the PCV valve, carbon clean and new injectors fitted and the cold start smoke has been reduced to non-existence. I still occasionally have a tiny little bit of smoke on cold start up but it only last for a few seconds and no where as "smelly" as before. Mind you, I have Stage 2 MRC tune, piggies and intake done, so a bit of cold start smoke is quite normal.

I would suggest doing a compression test first to rule out the obvious (and nasty). Then change the PCV valve and carbon clean.

mine does it after sitting a few days , I do a borescope inspection as its supercharged so keep and eye on things , anyhoo , there are 2 little lines of oil on the inlet valve side on the cyl walls when I rotated it so this can happen , likey cause is worn seals or seals came off the guides , PCV may have an issue as some oil get into the manifold so migrates down a port here and there so one 2 or both issues
