My DRC has just packed in, knocking from front offside (which is the only one that looks dry), the other 3 shocks have a small amount of fluid weepage. Still holding out hope that it's just a pipe that's leaking but, with 82K on the clock I'm expecting at least 1 of the shocks to be the problem.

Looking at all the posts the B14s seem to be the most popular choice, and most cost effective. Anyone else gone with something different, apart from KWs (which I couldn't see an option on the site for the Avant?) or the Vogtland?

They fail (produce noise) diagonally. Since that's how they are connected. If noise from front right. It's the rear left that needs replacing.. after 82k don't think too much about it!!! After 10years any shock would need replacing.. so no big deal! Just grab B14 and be happy!

B14's have become more popular due to cost. In the earlier days KWv3's were more regularly used and are the coilovers MRC recommended for the B7. I recall PSS9's were the coil of choice on the B5's. I've got KW and H&R ARB's and it drives well. Have driven one with B14's too and that drive well too. I'm sure you'll be happy with either. Get the ARB's though.

Replaced 2 shocks on mine then found the hydraulic lines were all corroding, binned it all and stuck b14s on

arbs-why? car handles fine on road with b14?
if you were doing lots track work yes maybe, its certainly good enough for even quick uk road driving with the b14 alone
yes probably a nice to have but not a "must have"
until i fitted the b14 i thought the car would be awful due to a lot of folk spouting "need arb with coilovers"
it puzzled me a little as even with cheaper coilovers my car didnt feel like it "needed" uprated arb
i had eibach arbs on my old 335d and it ruined an already borderline poor ride tbh

Different cars mate. Was your 335d an SE or M Sport. How many miles, what was the state of the suspension bushes, what tyres were they, what was the thickness of OEM ARB's on the Beemer, did you do front and rear or one or the other. If one, was it just the front as it is a RWD car after all... too many variables...

The short answer is - those that know, know and speak from experience!

The long answer is -

The difference between the RS4 and and A4 is a slightly wider track and DRC predominantly. DRC works to keep the car relatively flat by pushing oil from one corner to another. The ARB's fitted as stock obviously take this into consideration. The front ARB is the same for the whole A4 range including RS4. The rear bar is slightly thicker (2mm over the A4 S-Line bar). A further 2mm on SS+ equipped RS4's.

So, essentially when you take out the DRC and fit coilovers it's no different from any other A4, albeit with a slightly wider track.

High speed corners are what shows a coilovers car without updated ARB's up.

Did your car have SS+ or normal sport suspension?

If the car handled well for you, great. But unless you've driven one with updated ARB's, you're not really going to know how different the car feels.

Same to be said for good/crap geo.

Re track work. The car is a bloater, and not ideally suited really. Nurbergring ring work, etc maybe...

So the short answer is, if I'm fitting B14s I want to fit ARBs as well?
