Engine Oil Analysis

Post by birdiemachine » Mon Mar 27, 2017 11:26 pm

I change my oil every 5k miles and use castrol edge 5w30. My car is running brilliant and thought I would get the oil checked.

Anyone ever have this done on here? I've decided to go with Terry Dyson of Dyson Analysis in Texas. He is a very well regarded figure. Will report back here with the findings!

It's a 07 with 70k, always ran on super unleaded, oil change every 5k.

Cheers

This man is a expert. Over 35 years experience in the field. Tests your oil for all sorts of elements to see wear on the engine, presence of coolant, load of other things I don't understand lol.

Hope to learn how healthy my engine is and possibly determine if 5k is a good enough interval.

I think rwilson did this a few years ago. Can't remember if it was before or after he charged it.

I used to do this at every oil change on my e92 M3 but mostly to keep an eye on the Rod Bearing issue that plagued the S65 V8. I plan on continuing to do this on the RS4 though as my first oil change approaches. I use Blackstone Labs out of Indiana (http://www.blackstone-labs.com/).

was about to reply and while scrolling down i found the link to my original post , i have done another sample with same oil and after 4100 miles the numbers were the same , i didnt go back to the paper filter , dont know why ? but the numbers were around the same , no difference so around the same use the numbers are not changing so far , last one was done at 65k miles silicone was 11 this time so no change there either .

So received the results today and a 30 minute discussion from Terry of his findings, too much to put on here but very very interesting. Have attached a .pdf of the results.

Engine is performing well and is in good condition overall but some things to think about.

Mainly that there is quite some blowby which is more than likely caused by carbon issues and affected valve performance.

All metal readings were normal and actually good for a engine of this age.

He has recommended a semi bio Oil I will get some more details about that when I listen to the discussion again.

No glycol present so no coolant leaks. No abnormal metals appearing in the oil which would suggest cam/chain/valve issues, all in all very very informative.

He also thinks that the k&n in the Gruppe m could be better replaced by a stock filter and he has also required if the pcv valve has ever been changed. Is this a diy job?

High water content more than likely caused by me sending the sample in a washed out Coke bottle Image🤛
