Help needed re oil level

Post by neckarsulm » Tue Nov 08, 2016 5:35 pm

Forgive me if this sounds a bit odd but wondering if anyone can help with a couple of things?;

1 - The dipstick tube is mounted to the head with a bracket a few cm beneath where the tube goes in, could someone measure from up the upper edge of the bracket to the opening of the dipstick tube?

2 - (VCDS needed for this one) With the oil level at max on dipstick, could you look at measuring block 009 in the main engine ECU and see what the oil level is in mm (it's the first field).

3 - Again using VCDS, go into 'Instruments' module and look at measuring block 007, first field 'Oil level II' will have a reading in millilitres (ml), could you let me know what it is.

Thanks in advance.

OK was topping up this afternoon and took a few numbers.

Firstly please note - I do not top up to the max line on the dipstick as mine uses the oil noticeably faster when the level is maxxed. I top up to midway between the hatched area and the max line on the dipstick, this is about 2mm below the max line as per picture.

Some measurements after top up:
Top of bracket to dipstick tube lip: 42mm
Engine measurement block 009: 77.5mm
Instrument block 007: 2540ml

All done on level ground - pointless otherwise :D
Hope this helps you.
Cheers

Hi Andrew, hope you are well. Enjoyed the recent Sprint blue B7 review.

Sadly can not help with your requests here as I've just sold my second B7. Still painful! Thought I'd say hello though, as it's been a while.

All the best
Marc

Paul T you are a legend :beerchug:
Thanks for going to this trouble and I appreciate you being so specific about where your dipstick was reading.

The VCDS readings are uncanny as they are exactly the same as on my car. Wonder if it maxes out at a certain point and doesn't read higher than these figures?

This is the reason I asked, the MTM Supercharger conversion uses dipstick as return for supercharger oil, means undoing the union to dip the stick but it's worth it, although in time VCDS may be better once I get to know where the top up point on the stick is in ml/mm
I've measured from bracket to mouth of tube and I get a few mm more but then my stick only reads to the top of the hatched area which on this basis I should treat as the this car's real max.

Thanks again!

No problem! It is interesting that the numbers from VCDS are identical and i tend to agree with your conclusion that likely there is a point that they max out. Wish i had run the VCDS measurements before topping up as well - if i get a chance i will try that next time i do the fluids. Interesting to try to figure these numbers as an 'electronic dipstick'.
