You've read wrong my friend. Milltek were the exhausts of choice about 5 years ago. Still the most popular exhaust but the current trend is for either modyfing the standard exhaust or a JC Weldfab. Do a search, there are plenty of threads on this topic already.

I have a Milltek... it's ok but i wouldn't really recommend it... it drones badly under 2000 revs. my brother in law has done a centre box delete on his, and it sounds pretty much perfect.

Save yourself a wedge of money and start off with a centre resonator delete on your standard OEM system.
Sounds like the car should sound.... and your tailpipes will fit the rear end diffuser properly....

Then if you want more noise, gut your pre-cats.

Then if you're not entirely taken and you want to piss your neighbours off/set off car alarms, go and spend a fortune on a JC Weldfab or even go financially mental and have a Capristo fitted.

there was a miltek resonated sytem fitted to my rs4 when i bought it-i find it a pretty decent system, well enough made
fits well by the look of it and sounds nice- i bought the non res centre sections in case i fancied a change-but its loud enough for me at my age tbh

if it wasnt already fitted i would have simply left it with a standard system and possibly tried a centre section delete if it was easily changed back-but i dont think it is without a wee bit of work

Milltek no longer available.

They discontinued the RS4 B7 system last month. A few stockists may have some left.

I find it strange that Milltek get such a slagging, I've had several on all sorts of cars and never had a problem. At the moment I'm running a non res valved Milltek with gutted pre cats.
With the flaps open its as loud as you'd want and, yes there is a little drone but you can drive around it. With the flaps closed it still sounds good, nice deep rasp but a fair bit quieter.

Modified OEM exhaust (pre-cats deleted, centre resonator replaced with X-pipe, valves stuck open):

As above any idea on cost for this , seems a shame to ditch
A perfectly good exhaust system if nothing wrong with it when you can get this done ?

Pretty much the same here.. except i have no cats, but as you say... it is possible to drive it in such a way that you don't hit the "drone" revs. other than that, it is a good system, although if it was down to me to spend £1500 on a Milltek, i think i would spend a bit extra and get the JC exhaust, or if not wanting to spend that sort of money, for the sake of around £80, do the centre box delete.

Centre res delete about £100 to £200. Personally I wouldn't bother with x pipe, just go straight through.
Disconnect valves takes about 5mins and costs the price of 2 screws and 2 cable ties.

Gut pre cats is more about extra power than sound. It will add a little bit of sound but only worth doing as a power mod (rather than sound) as it'll be about £600 and will probably require a remap to get right of the error lights (although some people report having no errors).

I paid £650 - but that was mostly because I had new downpipes made up, rather than gutting the precats on the existing ones.

From memory, £450 of the total cost was the new downpipes, and the remaining £200 covered the X-pipe (made with flanges so I could put the OEM centre silencer back if needed), and fitting the system (the car went to the exhaust shop without an exhaust after removing an aftermarket system, and the OEM system arrived later).
