Mrc stage 1 vs stage 2 manifold

Post by Rw@@dy » Wed Jun 29, 2016 8:10 pm

Is there much difference between the power advantage of the stages of manifold? The flaps have started to stick on mine so I'm think it could be a good time to get this work done along with a stage 2 map

I had the flaps removed in my manifold when having the stage 2 map and carbon clean. Dunno which stage of manifold it was though! Car feels completely different but suppose it should!

From what I have read across many forums, it seems any manifold work yields a minimal power increase.

For balance, I must say that I didn't like the part-throttle response of a deflapped manifold. It lost the smoothness (refinement) of pickup that the flaps give (obviously). Each to their own, but if I were doing it again, I'd probably keep the flaps despite the fact they are a magnet for slime/carbon.

Thanks for that, always good to have a balanced opinion. Have to say don't think I'd like it if it changed the driving charactisitics much

I have a feeling the throttle response smoothness or lack of will be accentuated by the on/off of the stage 2 map as well.

Yes it might be me being over-critical. I had to go back and ask Doug to 'tone down' my throttle pot as it was too jerky for me - really didn't like it. After that it was much better (and a good improvement over standard of course). So I'm probably just picky!

At least if the flaps are removed, you dont need to worry about the bolts coming loose and dropping in the engine...

That was one of my main reasons for having it done... Preventative maintenance

How many b7 rs4's are there, and how many have had the bolts come loose? I'm afraid I'm rather of the opinion you're mitigating a risk so small it's immeasurable.

Weighing it up.. I'd rather pay for a de-flap then have the hassle and expense of a new engine being fitted...

I've only heard of this happening once or twice I think. My reasoning for removal was purely performance and carbon deterrent based but it does tend to get people worrying when someone comes out with pics like that!!!
