Steering wheel whine

Post by rs4uk » Sun Jun 19, 2016 9:59 pm

Hi guys
I noticed that on my rs4 if I full lock the steering in either direction I get a whine, does anybody else get this? Is it normal?

Only get the noise on full lock

Are you sure it's the steering wheel? I get something very similar and comes from slightly to the left.

I finally realised it was only when the wife was in the passenger seat though.

Check your power steering fluid level.

Haha. Excellent

I presume you've checked your power steering fluid level?. Have had cars in the past that have been noisy on full lock when the fluid is low

As Mike said. Check power steering fluid level. Mine was doing it and a very small top up cured the problem.

You might want to flush the PS fluid too. viewtopic.php?f=35&t=114100

I get a squeal when on full lock against the stops.... it doesnt make any noise at any other time.
Initially i thought it was a belt slipping but since the power steering is directly driven from the PTO gears, ive put it down to an ageing relief valve.
My mates RS4 makes exactly the same noise so im not bothered by it.
Might do a flush but its tickety boo otherwise.

This happened me a few weeks back. Was the fluid level. Very small top up needed.

Remember when measuring the level the dip stick is not to be screwed down, just measure when unscrewed. Only takes a second or two of light pour to top up.

The Power steering fluid reservoir is on the right hand side of the engine bay in front of the windscreen washer resevoir. There is a cut out for it in the plastic engine cover.
