Engine oil (again)
Engine oil (again)
My car is due an oil service and having done lots of research (mainly on here) I have decided to use Fuchs TITAN GT1 XTL 5W-40 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil (5W-40 to hopefully reduce consumption a little).
I can get it for £70 for 12 litres (Opie) which is a lot less than the Millers equivalent I've also considered.
Any thoughts or opinions? I know many of you will say stick with Castrol Edge 5W-30, but I think there are better oils out there.

Re: Engine oil (again)
I personally use Castrol Edge at the moment but used a fully-synth Fuchs oil in my previous Impreza. I haven't bothered to read the technical info about any oil products for the RS4, I've just went with the general consensus for simplicity. Pricey though.
Good price for 12 litres - assume you are buying a good bit extra for top-ups.
On that note, is the oil 9l or 9.5l capacity? Found as many posts on either figure.

How have you come to conclusion that there are better oils than Castrol are you a Petroleum chemist
Re: Engine oil (again)
I did quite a bit of snooping on various forums and such, eventually took the plunge with 20L of Fuchs Titan GT-1 and certainly no problems thus far, only put about 3000 miles on the car myself though.
Think it was closer to £85 though.

Castrol edge is made of of type 3 PAO base stocks.. basically it's barely even synthetic. It isn't allowed to be sold as "fully synthetic" in Germany for this reason. Ester base stocks are the best in terms of film strength, heat resistance etc. It's only slightly worse at absorbing moisture so castrol and semi synth oils would be better for short trips. For all-out best protection when you're hooning it these are the best IMO:RS04YOB wrote:How have you come to conclusion that there are better oils than Castrol are you a Petroleum chemist
Motul 300V
Fuchs/silkolene pro s
Millers
Quantum
a few others
Castrol edge
In that order. A lot of the money for castrol is purely in the brand and marketing, it's nothing special really.

Mytyres.co.uk can do 12L of that oil for £66.60 delivered.
Opie won't price match though, I asked when looking for a different type approved Fuchs oil.

£87 for 20L Titan GT1 5w30 on the link below. I'll be ordering this when mine needs a service in a month or two:

EDIT: Just re-read and see you were after 5w40, and also didn't realise there are actually different variations of the Titan GT1. I'll keep my original post here and allow myself to be educated by someone who knows these oils better than I.Which one's the one to go for?

Re: Engine oil (again)
The whole issue is a head wreck I have a mate who works for a oil production company he says as long as it meets the manufactures spec its is fine regardless of the brand. Then reading on other forums some people say 5-30 is too thin and the fuel dilutes and it generally deteriorates and must be changed at 3000 miles and your better using 5-40
Interesting reading here http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ub ... 22&fpart=1
A lot of people are using this it seems https://jhmotorsports.com/shop/catalog/ ... 56_310_314

Re: Engine oil (again)
I guess that would be fine normally.. a lot of us are running substantially more power and torque, and doing track days so will want the best possible oil.RS04YOB wrote:a mate who works for a oil production company he says as long as it meets the manufactures spec its is fine regardless of the brand.
I definitely woudn't be comfortable thrashing my '6 round a race track on any old oil that happens to meet specs. I want better than spec oil. The Motul 300v doesn't even have any specs it just says exceeds all manufacturers requirements.
Just my opinion anyways.

Its seems 5w-40 seems to be be a more favourable grade too go for than the 5w30 by looking about on other forums

Re: Engine oil (again)
i run a supercharged RS4 and it gets ragged a LOT and have always used castrol edge 5w30 in 6 oil changes , (partly because i can get it from costco for 30 quid for 4 l , anyhoo , after 4000 odd miles of running over its 3rd oil change in my ownership i changed it and sent a sample for lab analysis and if came back perfect , no fuel dilution ,a whole list of results were sent back and the only one that was slightly high , but still within spec was silicone , which was likey due to the high flow air filter allowing slightly larger particles through , but now i cant get edge at costco anymore as they dont do it now so was looking at the highest spec shell helix ultra ECT 5w30 which is not cheap but is 507 spec and fully synthetic too

Re: Engine oil (again)
I remember your post about the lab you sent it off to, keep meaning to get mine sent off I run a APR charger and have the revolution filter so would be interesting to see the results. I rarely do about 1500 mile then the oil gets changed or a year what ever comes first it barely goes black at all. Did read abit about 5w40 being better for these engines may give that a go on the next servicerwilsonrs4 wrote:i run a supercharged RS4 and it gets ragged a LOT and have always used castrol edge 5w30 in 6 oil changes , (partly because i can get it from costco for 30 quid for 4 l , anyhoo , after 4000 miles of running over its 3rd oil change in my ownership i changed it and sent a sample for lab analysis and if came back perfect , no fuel dilution ,a whole list of results were sent back and the only one that was slightly high , but still massively within spec was silicone , which was likey due to the high flow air filter allowing slightly larger particles through , but now i cant get edge at costco anymore as they dont do it now so was looking at the highest spec shell helix ultra ECT 5w30 which is not cheap but is 507 spec and fully synthetic too
Re: Engine oil (again)
Millers can give you an oil sample diagnostic. Worth contacting them, from memory it's a free service too.
Re: Engine oil (again)
Millers do offer it they offer 2 test over a time where you can compare the samplesmarc1 wrote:Millers can give you an oil sample diagnostic. Worth contacting them, from memory it's a free service too.

Its interesting that they recommend 2 grades 5w30 10w40 5w30 bring the long life and 10w40 being the interval
