Floating rear rotors

Post by irn_bru_ce » Mon Dec 14, 2015 10:23 pm

I don't do that many miles per year, usually 4-5k, but due to my 5 week on/off rota abroad, my car sits for half the time not turning a wheel. This leads to brake discs only lasting about 3 years due to corrosion on previous cars. Next year sometime I'll require a new set of rear discs, but since I intend to keep the car for more than 3 years, I was thinking that rotors with bells might be cheaper option in the long term.

I have the ceramics up front so this is just about the rears.

So far I see this is the options

Stoptech , £1000 for rotors with bells
Tarox , £688 for rotors with bells

Are there any other options of 2 piece rear discs? I'm sure I read about a kit being developed on another forum where once you had the bells then replacement rotors only cost £300, but cant find the post anywhere now.

Build a car port and put it away clean/dry?

I've recently been abroad for over five weeks after fitting new rear discs to mine and still they look like new. The OEM rear discs are more than man enough to work with the Ceramic setup, my only complaint is the rear wheels look dirtier than the fronts after a while.

JHM do some that look good but by time add in delivery and import duties work out quite pricey.
Don't think they have a UK distributor.
AP don't do anything for rear.

Park it in gear with the handbrake off - that way the pads aren't in contact with the discs - although doesn't help justify some cool discs. I use my car sporadically (although not 5 weeks off) and still on the original discs front & rear (06, 43k miles)

Whenever I'm parking up for more than a few hours that's what I always do.

I've got a set of these to fit,http://www.girodisc.com/Girodisc-Rear-2 ... _6338.html
they are a proper floating disk unlike they JHM ones. Which I'm currently running and have worn out with one set of yellow stuff pads.
They work out a bit expensive with VAT etc but couldn't find anything as good over here..

OK , I see there are UK dealers listed for the girodisc on their website, although think they are all 911 focused , I've sent an email and will await a reply

The car is already in a car port, parked in gear on a level surface with handbrake off , just as I kept my old car , although for the RS4 i also use a stormshield cover

Got a quote for the girodiscs

Complete Front Disc Set £950 + VAT
Replacement Rotors £585 + VAT

Quite expensive considering they are only $700 a set in US&A , will have to work out what the customs duty would be if I ordered them direct

I'm really interested to hear how you get on, I'm pretty sure I have got warped front dics so looking to replace the rotors (big brake kits just too expensive vs the benefit I would get). Had looked at JHM and was pretty keen until I saw the Girodiscs......although I had looked the US site price too (UK price is double before VAT.....WTF is that about?).
